What is an allergist?

Allergist is an internist or pediatrician who undergoes further training of 2-3 years to treat patients with atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, allergic asthma, food allergy and anaphylaxis.

After finishing medicine in the Philippines (also US), physicians who are interested in becoming allergists should have a completion of residency in either internal medicine or pediatrics. Once they pass the exam of either the Philippine College of Physicians (P*P) or the Philippine Pediatric Society(PPS) specialty board, they can then undergo a fellowship training in a conjoined allergy/immunology training program and take the sub- specialty examination. After becoming Diplomates, they are certified to see both adults and children with allergy regardless of whether they are initially trained in internal medicine or pediatrics; therefore, allergy is a unique specialty!
