This year's Outstanding Intern Award winner is Kaitlyn Cornell! 🎉

Kaitlyn completed an internship with the Suffolk County Police Department on Long Island and is currently interning with the Tampa Police Department.

In addition to her internships, Kaitlyn is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, the national honor society for first-year students and Alpha Phi Sigma, the criminology and criminal justice honors society, demonstrating her commitment to excellence both inside and outside the classroom.

Kaitlyn shared that one of the most impactful lessons she has learned is the power of words and how meaningful communication during moments of vulnerability can shape outcomes and build trust. She has also developed a deep appreciation for the strong bonds within law enforcement, from the unique partnerships in K-9 units to the sense of family within a police squad.

Kaitlyn is currently in the application process to attend the TPD scholarship academy and hopes to join the Tampa Police Department after graduation. 👮‍♀️🚔🎓

Our department is excited to announce that Holly Burroughs is our department’s Outstanding Graduate Student Award recipient! 🎉

A University of Tampa alumna, Holly was named Officer of the Year at her previous agency and currently serves with the Tampa Police Department, where she was recognized as Community Police Officer of the Month in October 2025.

Holly is also an active member of the Tampa Bay Human Trafficking Task Force, contributing to critical efforts aimed at combating human trafficking and supporting vulnerable populations in our community.

Beyond her work in law enforcement, Holly is an entrepreneur and founder of Valora Kits, a business dedicated to supporting female first responders. Through thoughtfully curated care boxes that include shift essentials and post-shift stress relief items, Holly is making a meaningful impact on the well-being of those who serve.

We are honored to celebrate her achievements and look forward to all she will continue to accomplish. Please join us in congratulating Holly Burroughs on this well-deserved recognition! 🎓

Congratulations to our department's Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award winner, Abigail Zalles! Abigail is a criminology and criminal justice major with a minor in applied sociology, a member of Phi Kappa Phi, a dean's list member every semester since fall 2022, the Criminology Club student government representative, and now the president of the !

Abigail also interned with the Wi******er Police Department and currently serves as a social services intern with the Public Defender’s Office for the 13th Judicial Circuit. These experiences have given her a well-rounded perspective of the criminal justice system and helped shape her future goals!

As she prepares to graduate this May, we are excited to see all that Abigail will accomplish next. Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved recognition!

Two of our outstanding undergraduate students, Brigette Rosenberg and Sarah Voss, presented a research poster titled “The Nature and Extent of Solitary Confinement Policies in U.S. Prisons” at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences annual conference in Philadelphia last week.

Their work, under the supervision of Dr. Rachel Severson, explores restrictive housing policies from each of the 50 states to determine whether variation exists and how the 2016 DOJ report outlining "guiding principles" for restrictive housing is followed.

Congratulations to Brigette and Sara on representing our program and sharing their work on a national stage!
