HOW TOM MBOYA WAS USED TO UNDERMINE OGINGA ODINGA
The famous Limuru Convention chaired by both President Kenyatta and Mboya on 13th March 1966.
The session involved the implementation of Mboya's amendements to the KANU constitution which abolished the powerful position of KANU deputy president held by Vice president Oginga Odinga .
The whole idea was to water down Odinga's influence by creating eight new KANU vice president positions.
During the meeting, Odinga had a bitter exchange with both president Kenyatta and Mboya ,telling them that he did not agree with the amendments as they had not been discussed in earlier meetings. He suggested that the implementation of the amendments be deferred to allow further discussion.
President Kenyatta ,in reply , told him that a postponement would defeat the purpose of the conference.
As the controversy surrounding the new positions intensified,Odinga stormed out of the meeting in protest escorted by his close allies ,Bildad Kaggia and Munyua Waiyaki.
As he walked out he warned Tom Mboya,Omolo Agar and Argwings Kodhek all of whom were pro amendments
"I can see you guys pushing me out of the Government and KANU but be assured that these people wont let you eat",he warned Mboya in dholuo.
Odinga resigned three weeks later.
Recalling the Limuru conference in an interview with Drum magazine 1985 ,Odinga said:
"We left Limuru conference centre a bitter group of dedicated nationalists .We had full confidence with the ability of Kenyatta to lead. But we had serious misgivings about some of his closest colleagues and advisers .Intrigues and infighting in the cabinet had made it impossible for us to work for the good of Kenya."
"The writing was on the wall it was either i remain in the government as a lame duck vice-president or quit and form another political party."
The Limuru conference was the final nail in the coffin of Kenyatta-Odinga frosty working relationship.
