Because it sounds similar to the Japanese verb katsu (勝つ, to win), tonkatsu is often eaten for good luck by students on the eve of an important exam or athletes before a game. That is why a lot of restaurants around universities offer tonkatsu meals and bentō during the exam season.

Going through an interesting read for a coming article. A hint: the title of the book is "History of Japanese Alcohol" (日本の酒の歴史), compiled by the late Sato Benzaburo. Well researched and documented, a recommended read to anyone interested in the history of sake (and not afraid of obscure kanji characters).

When published overseas, the 1961 song "Ue o Muite Arukō" ("I Look Up as I Walk") was retitled as "Sukiyaki". There is no mention of the dish or any connection in the lyrics, but the word was deemed easy to remember and recognizable!

To produce vast quantities of smoked katsuo (skipjack tuna), entire warehouses are used as smoking ovens! Firewood is burned on the 1st floor while the fish is placed from the 2nd to the 4th floor depending on its smoking stage.
