Two faculty members of the Communication Division were invited as resource persons in the hybrid course on 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 offered by the 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐆𝐒𝐀𝐒), 𝐊𝐨𝐛𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧, namely: 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐌𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐃𝐆. 𝐃𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧 and 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐭. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐀𝐧𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐏. 𝐝𝐞 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬.

The course opened via Zoom on April 24, welcoming 21 international graduate students from six countries. The diverse cohort includes 13 from Japan, 4 from China, and 1 each from Nepal, Indonesia, Thailand, and Austria.

This event is a roundtable discussion and launch of speech anthologies curated by BA Communication Arts students.

Dr. Kate de Jesus presented her paper, “𝑩𝒂𝒉𝒂𝒚-𝒃𝒂𝒉𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒔 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝑴𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒅𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚: 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒐 𝑰𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒚 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑳𝒂𝒓𝒑 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏,” as part of the seminar “Mapping the Border of Larp Research Methods.”

Her participation brought a distinctly Filipino perspective to an international conversation on live action role-playing, game studies, and research methodologies. Alongside gaming scholars from the Nordic countries, namely, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, as well as Italy, Singapore, and Germany, Dr. Kate de Jesus shared how Filipino children’s imaginative play tradition Bahay-bahayan, and Wari (imagine; discern) and Yari (iterate; design) can contribute to larp research, communication design, and reflexive dialogue through play.

Dr. Kate de Jesus continues to expand the spaces where Filipino communication scholarship, creativity, and play-based pedagogy can be recognized and shared with the world.
