The history of 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 is also a history of leadership.

👨🏻‍🔬 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐥𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 is recognized as the 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐓 (𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑨𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒔, 𝑰𝒏𝒄.)

👨🏻‍🔬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐠 was the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐓 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 who played a pivotal role in establishing the medical technology profession

👨🏻‍🔬 𝐃𝐫. 𝐆𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐯𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬 was the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐇 (𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑨𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉) 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭. Under his leadership, PASMETH was formally organized to promote high standards in medical technology education, enhance curriculum and faculty development, and strengthen collaboration among schools offering Medical Technology and Public Health.

These 𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 laid the foundation of professional unity, ethics, and advocacy. Without their vision, medical technology in the Philippines would not have the organized strength it has today.

Now, in the era of the 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, their leadership continues to inspire us to go further by creating organizations and movements that safeguard our profession while also advancing sustainable healthcare policies, eco-friendly laboratory practices, and global health equity.

Their legacy lives on every time a Filipino medical technologist advocates not only for quality education and accurate diagnostics, but also for a healthier, greener planet. 🌱🌿 🍃

The 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 was established at 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 (𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬). It proudly produced the country’s 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 in 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟓, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞 𝐔𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢, whose achievement paved the way for generations of Filipino MedTech professionals. He later pursued and completed his Doctor of Medicine at Far Eastern University (FEU) and went on to become a successful OB-GYN in the USA.

Education has always been at the core of the profession, equipping future Medical Technologists with both technical expertise and professional values. But as our world changes, so too must our education.

Today, with the growing need for sustainability, Medical Technology programs must prepare students not only to excel in diagnostics but also to lead in green innovations in laboratory science. Tomorrow’s graduates will be called to reduce waste, design eco-friendly lab systems, and advocate for sustainable healthcare practices. 𝐌𝐫. 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞 𝐔𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢 may have been the first, but the next generation of MedTechs must be the ones to lead the 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 🌱🌿 🍃

Did you know that the history of 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟓 with the establishment of the 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲’𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲, now known as the 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐥𝐚 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲?

It was set up during 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐫 𝐈𝐈 by the 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐒 𝐀𝐫𝐦𝐲 at 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐚 𝐒𝐭., 𝐒𝐭𝐚. 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐳, 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐥𝐚. When the US Army left, the laboratory was turned over to the National Department of Health in June 1945 and later reopened in 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟓 by 𝐃𝐫. 𝐏𝐢𝐨 𝐝𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐝𝐚.

Born out of necessity during World War II, this laboratory became the seed that grew into a nationwide network of clinical laboratories that now serve millions of Filipinos every day. It represented the beginning of organized laboratory services in the country.

Fast forward to today: as part of the 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, clinical laboratories are being called to adopt sustainable practices, from minimizing plastic waste in test kits to using energy-efficient equipment. The same pioneering spirit that established the first lab should now guide us in making our laboratories not just centers of healing, but also champions of environmental responsibility.

On 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟏, 𝟏𝟗𝟔𝟗, 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐜𝐭 𝟓𝟓𝟐𝟕, or the 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐀𝐜𝐭, was signed into law. This landmark legislation officially recognized Medical Technology as a profession in the Philippines, defining the practice, regulating education, and protecting the rights of practitioners.

𝐑𝐀 𝟓𝟓𝟐𝟕 laid the foundation for the profession’s growth. It recognized the importance of Laboratory diagnostics in safeguarding public health, long before the world fully realized the critical role of medical technologists in pandemics, global health crises, and environmental health challenges.

At this year's 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤, as we embrace the 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐑𝐀 𝟓𝟓𝟐𝟕 reminds us that professional recognition is just the beginning. The real challenge now is ensuring that our profession continues to evolve by integrating sustainable laboratory practices, renewable technologies, and eco-friendly innovations so that Filipino medical laboratory scientists can truly contribute to a healthier, greener future. 🌿🌱

This year’s theme, “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞”, highlights the Medical Technology profession’s vital role not only in diagnostics and laboratory science but also in promoting sustainable practices in healthcare. From reducing medical waste and promoting eco-conscious laboratory innovations to advancing health systems that care for both people and the planet, Medical Technologists are at the heart of this transformation.
