Publication announcement!!!

Dr. Natalie Keefer has co-authored an article titled, Leveraging Economic and Linguistic Funds of Knowledge through Biliteracy Strategies, in the National Council for the Social Studies flagship journal Social Education with Spanish immersion educators Jyhane Young, Julia Lopez, and Dr. Michelle Haj-Broussard. As part of a U.S. Department of Education professional development grant, the authors embarked on a collaborative project to develop an upper elementary social studies curriculum for students in Spanish/English two-way dual language immersion settings. In these immersion contexts, many students come from multilingual homes, where two or more languages are spoken, while other students come from monolingual homes where Spanish or English is spoken. Thus, the focus of this upper elementary curriculum project was two-fold: we aimed to (a) support biliteracy and metalinguistic awareness while students (b) applied history and economic knowledge and forms of representation to consider the compelling question, How do multinational communities support the economy?

Publication announcement! Dr. Natalie Keefer has published a chapter in the International Handbook of French Education, edited by Dr. Jerry Parker and Dr. Amany Saleh: https://press.starscholars.org/press/catalog/book/61.

In her chapter, A Motherscholar Currere au Milieu Francophone, Dr. Keefer investigates her experiences as a lifelong French language learner and motherscholar, and how her journey led to self-initiated and insightful study abroad experiences in Paris, Tours, Nice, and Martinique that profoundly shaped her identity. Additionally, Dr. Keefer discusses personal implications and challenges for lifelong French language learners, including navigating spatial, temporal, financial, and logistical pitfalls. Lastly, she offers public policy and pedagogical recommendations in support of viewing language-learning curriculum as a verb, an intentional personal pilgrimage through integrated regressive, progressive, analytical, and synthetic stages.
