Your methodology chapter shouldn’t start with a questionnaire.

It should start with a much simpler question:

👉 What evidence do I need to answer my research question?

Once you identify the evidence you’re looking for, choosing the right data collection method and sampling strategy becomes a logical decision—not a guess.

This was one of the key discussions in today’s live postgraduate dissertation seminar, and it’s a concept that can transform the quality of your methodology chapter.

Three students. One supervision session. One mistake they all had in common.

This week, I supervised 3 dissertation students working on completely different research topics. Yet every one of them was struggling with the same issue.

They were trying to write before they had clearly defined their research problem, research gap, and objectives.

Once we worked through that together, everything else became much easier—from structuring the literature review to choosing the right methodology.

💡 A strong dissertation doesn’t start with writing. It starts with thinking clearly.

If you’re feeling stuck, take a step back and ask yourself:

✔️ What problem am I actually investigating?
✔️ What gap in the literature am I addressing?
✔️ Do my research objectives logically follow?

Getting these right can save you hours of rewriting later.

🎓 Most students think they know how university works… but these facts often come as a surprise.

Here are three things that could completely change how you think about applying to university:

✅ You don’t always need GCSEs—equivalent qualifications may be accepted.
✅ Mature applicants are often assessed on their work experience, skills and potential.

Don’t let one mistake undo months of work.

Ethical approval isn’t just another university requirement—it’s there to protect your participants, protect you as a researcher, and protect the integrity of your study.

Starting interviews, surveys or questionnaires before approval can mean your university won’t accept your data, forcing you to repeat your research.

Most students don’t struggle with their dissertation because they’re not capable. They struggle because they make a few avoidable mistakes right at the beginning.

The three I see most often are:

❌ Choosing a topic because it’s “popular” instead of one they’re genuinely interested in.

❌ Creating too many research objectives, making the project unnecessarily complicated.

❌ Trying to do everything at once by mixing research approaches, when a well-designed qualitative or quantitative study is often much stronger.

Remember: a dissertation isn’t about proving how much you can do. It’s about demonstrating that you can answer one research question well.

Keep it focused. Keep it logical. Keep it simple.

🚨 PRIMARY RESEARCH MADE EASY 🚨

One of the biggest misconceptions I see as a dissertation supervisor is that students believe secondary research is the easier option.

In reality, a high-quality systematic literature review is often far more challenging than students expect. It requires structure, critical thinking, and a rigorous research process.

If primary research feels intimidating, it’s usually because it’s unfamiliar—not because it’s harder.

Choose the research approach that suits you:
📊 Love numbers? Consider a questionnaire.
💬 Prefer conversations? Semi-structured interviews might be a better fit.

And one final tip: don’t overcomplicate your dissertation by mixing methods. One well-executed data collection method will almost always produce stronger findings than trying to do everything.

✨ Don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from choosing the research that could actually make your dissertation easier—and much more enjoyable.
