On 15 September 2026, the Director for CARD, Dr. Innocent Pangapanga-Phiri, delivered a keynote presentation on “Climate Justice in the Face of El Niño: Malawi’s Outlook, Preparedness and the Imperative for Action” during the launch of the 2026 Global Week of Mobilization for Climate Justice at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).

In his presentation, Dr. Pangapanga highlighted how climate shocks such as El Niño affect communities differently, with low-income households often bearing a greater burden despite having fewer resources to prepare, adapt and recover. He emphasized the importance of placing climate justice at the centre of preparedness and response to such shocks.

The Global Week of Mobilization for Climate Justice runs from 14–20 September 2026, bringing together communities and stakeholders around this year’s theme, “This World is Ours: Ending Dirty Energy and Pushing for a Fossil-Free Future.” The week provides a platform for raising awareness and mobilizing collective action towards a more just and climate-resilient future.

CARD Research Fellow attends Advanced Bioinformatics Training in Nairobi, Kenya

This week, our Research Fellow, Mr. Joseph Kanyamuka, is at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya, participating in an intensive Advanced Bioinformatics training under the Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS) Fellowship Programme. The training, running from 7–18 September 2026, brings together researchers and plant breeders to build practical skills in the analysis and interpretation of genomic and other biological datasets. For Joseph, the training is an important step toward connecting his background in agricultural economics, quantitative analysis and agricultural development with emerging genomic approaches in crop research.

Joseph’s particular interest is pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), an important legume for Malawi's smallholder farming systems. The crop offers food and income opportunities while its ability to perform under relatively dry conditions and its contribution to soil fertility make it particularly relevant to efforts to build climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

The skills in bioinformatics, genomic data analysis, high-throughput sequencing, statistical computing and bioinformatics workflows will strengthen CARD and LUANAR’s capacity to contribute to evidence-based crop improvement, impact evaluation and agricultural policy research. In particular, genomic information can eventually be connected with data on crop productivity, farmer adoption, market performance, climate resilience and household welfare. The training thus creates an opportunity to strengthen interdisciplinary research that brings together crop science, genomics, economics and development

Collaborative Climate Action in Mwanza

A dedicated team of representatives from Agriculture, CISP, Total Land Care, Forestry, Extension Land Resource and LUANAR CARD recently conducted a site visitation to Njanjama Village in the Mwanza district to advance the impactful AGREE Malawi Project. The purpose of this joint field mission was to carefully assess and select the most suitable venue for a local living lab site.

Staff of the Week | Peter Sumani

Today we spotlight Peter Sumani, one of CARD’s earliest employees, who served as an Office Assistant for 30 years. Having joined when the Centre was still known as the Agricultural Policy Research Unit (APRU), Mr. Sumani points to teamwork as one of the things that has made CARD a good place to work.

’s Seed Policy for a Resilient

Yesterday, researchers from the Centre for Agricultural Research and Development - CARD Luanar, led by Innocent Pangapanga-Phiri, engaged the Department of Crop Development (DCD) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development (MoAIWD), led by Director , as part of the ongoing Evaluation of the and Development of its successor . The engagement assessed progress, achievements, and implementation gaps of the 2018 - 2022 National Seed Policy.

The consultation further provided an opportunity to identify emerging challenges and priorities that should inform the successor National Seed Policy, ensuring that Malawi has a competitive, inclusive, resilient, and farmer-responsive seed system capable of supporting agrifood system transformation and national food security.

AGREE Malawi Engages Chikwawa District Council on Agroforestry Project

On 28 August 2026, the Agroforestry for Resilient Management and Ecosystem Balance (AGREE) consortium engaged the Chikwawa District Council to introduce the project and discuss its planned implementation in the district.

The AGREE Malawi project will work with farmers to integrate agroforestry into their farming systems as part of efforts to strengthen livelihoods, improve resilience and support sustainable management of agricultural landscapes.

The project brings together CSIP, Total Land Care, Save the Children, LUANAR through the Centre for Agricultural Research and Development (CARD), and Christian Blind Mission.

The Chikwawa District Council welcomed the initiative and encouraged the consortium to return at the end of the project to share results, lessons and progress made during implementation.
