GIS student receives offers from University of Cambridge and University of Massachusets Amherst!

A GIS student has received offers from two universities. The University of Cambridge in the UK and the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the US. The University of Cambridge is one of the top universities in the world while the University of Massachusetts Amherst is in the top 30 of public universities in the US.
GIS is delighted that graduates of our faculty are pursuing further education at institutions abroad.

ORIENTATION WELCOME EVENT VOLUNTEERS🤗

Volunteers are sought for the Orientation welcome event taking
place for new GIS students on April 1 st (Saturday). Please come along and
introduce our newest GIS members to the facility and university.

Date: Saturday April 1st , 2023
Place: G201

Orientation will take place from 13.30 to 15.30. After the orientation we would
like our volunteers to form groups and get the ball rolling with introductions
through games, etc.

GIS student receives offer from Strathclyde University 🎓🇬🇧
A GIS student has received an international postgraduate offer, this time from Strathclyde University in the UK. In 2020 this university was named Scottish University of the Year in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, it is also the first British university to be awarded University of the Year twice in the Times Higher Education Awards. In 2023 Strathclyde University was ranked 16th in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2023.
GIS is delighted that an increasing number of students are pursuing further education at institutions abroad. ✈️

GIS student receives offer from Oxford Brookes University!
A GIS student has received an international postgraduate offer, this time from Oxford Brookes University in the UK. This university was ranked in the top 50 British universities in the Guardian University Guide 2022 and it is one of the world’s top universities in 16 subjects in the latest QS World University Rankings.

GIS is delighted that an increasing number of students are pursuing further education at institutions abroad.

A GIS student has received yet another international postgraduate offer, this time from the University of Hawaii in the US. The university is in the top 50 of the most diverse colleges in the US, and in the top 1% of universities worldwide according to ARTU. The campus encompasses a spacious 320 acres and is home to one of the largest academic libraries in the US.

The first nationally representative demographic survey that asks about sexual orientation and gender identity in Japan has just been launched by a group of demographers, including GIS Assistant Professor Daiki Hiramori. This survey will make it possible to estimate the proportion of sexual and gender minorities in Japan and to compare the living conditions and attitudes of sexual and gender minorities with the majority. GIS students win Hosei Progressive Learning Award 🏆

GIS students Manami Kon and Airi Matsubara were part of an inter-faculty team who won the Progressive Learning Award (‘Shinshu-no-manabi-sho’ 進取の学び賞) at the 6th annual Hosei Practical Knowledge Award Ceremony (‘Jiyu-wo-ikinuku-jissenchi-taisho’ 自由を生き抜く実践知大賞). The awards were established to honour education and research which embodies the Hosei University Charter. Manami Kon said of the event: “there were so many interesting students who are trying to make Hosei University a better environment for all people involved and I am so inspired by them. This became my motivation to study more and give back to society in some way.”

Congratulations to both of these exceptional GIS students! 👏

GIS student receives postgraduate offer from the University of Tokyo ‍🏫

Another GIS student is taking their studies to the next level after receiving a postgraduate offer to study sociology at the University of Tokyo! GIS is thrilled that one of their students has been accepted to one of the country’s leading research institutions and we are sure that the foundations of studying sociology in our curriculum will be a solid platform for continued academic success. In the fall of 2022, GIS Professor Stevie Suan took part in a Digital Dialogue online roundtable discussion for the Association of Asian Studies to discuss the Mechademia journal and conference that he organizes and is an associate editor for. In this discussion, they address the history of and contemporary trends in the fields of anime and manga studies, Asian Studies, contemporary popular culture, and media studies. Visit by representatives of the University of Sussex

This week GIS welcomed a visit by representatives of the University of Sussex in the UK. James Minhas and Kazuki Kido came to talk to OAS staff members about study abroad in the UK through the OAS program and strengthening our partnership.

We were able to confirm further details about the opportunities GIS students would have if they study at Sussex for one semester, and now that Japan’s border is open again we could start making plans for future talks at Hosei University by Sussex staff members.
