MEDIA RELEASE: 8th GOJU-KAI GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – CHIBA, JAPAN (8-10 AUGUST 2025)
Goju-Kai Namibia sent a team of 51 athletes to participate at the 2025 8th Goju-Kai Global Championships in Chiba Japan, which took place from 8 to 10 August 2025. 35 countries participated (over 3,000 entries) in this prestigious event that takes place every 4 years, but was skipped in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic. The team travelled and participated under the Namibia Karate Federation’s endorsement, which is affiliated to the Namibia Sports Commission under the Ministry of Youth and Sport.
A contingent of 79 travelled to Japan for this year’s event, 51 of these participated. A number of these 51 athletes did exceptionally well and went through multiple rounds before being knocked out. Goju-Kai Namibia achieved 8th place overall winning a total of 10 medals (1 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze). The medal winners were:
- Leonard Martin (Gold – Male Veterans Kumite; Silver – Male Veterans Kata)
- Shaun Willemse (Silver – Male Veterans Kumite)
- Roche Thomas (Silver – Female Senior Jiyu Kumite; Bronze – Senior Female Kumite)
- Amelie Rothkegel (Silver – Female Cadet Kumite)
- Jean Scholz (Silver – Male U12 Kumite)
- Ava Izaks (Bronze – Female Senior Kumite; Bronze – Female Senior Kata)
- Nathan Goliath (Bronze – Male Senior Kumite)
In addition to the above achievements three of our official referees had the opportunity to officiate matches at the highest level during this tournament. The three officials were:
- Burtie Woest
- Nathan Goliath
- Luke de Vries
Goju-Kai Namibia was established in 1990 by Trevor Norval and has since produced numerous highly qualified instructors and karatekas who have proved themselves in the local and international karate arena.
