Diane Keaton -- the Oscar-winning actress whose quirky charm, infectious laugh, and signature style made her one of Hollywood's most beloved and unconventional stars -- was one of the Mighty Girl role models who died in 2025. Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton dropped out of community college at 19 to pursue acting in New York, eventually rising to fame in the 1970s with her role as Kay Adams in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" films. However, it was her collaboration with Woody Allen that truly cemented Keaton's legendary status.

Keaton, who died in October at age 79, won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Allen's 1977 romantic comedy "Annie Hall," playing the titular character that Allen wrote loosely based on her. When accepting her Oscar in 1978, wearing her signature menswear-inspired style, Keaton said with characteristic understatement: "Well, it's simply terrific. Naturally, I'm very honored to have been nominated with actresses like Jane Fonda, Shirley MacLaine, Anne Bancroft, and Marsha Mason. This is, um, something."

The film introduced filmgoers to Keaton's matchless and gender-nonconforming sense of style, immediately identifiable by her use of men's slacks, vests and hats. Keaton initially wanted to be a singer and pursued that dream, even performing numbers in "Annie Hall," but ultimately found her calling in acting -- though she maintained an aversion to theater, once saying "Night after night? Doing a play?" while putting an imaginary gun to her head. "That's my idea of hell." Her other memorable roles included "Baby Boom," "The First Wives Club," the "Father of the Bride" films, and "Something's Gotta Give." Her final film was "Summer Camp" (2024), a comedy about three old friends at an eventful reunion.

Throughout her illustrious career, Keaton received four Academy Award nominations, winning once, along with two Golden Globe Awards and one BAFTA Award. She was also accomplished as a director, photographer, and bestselling author who wrote about a dozen books. Keaton never married and adopted two children in her 50s: a daughter, Dexter, and a son, Duke.

"Getting older hasn't made me wiser," she told People magazine in 2019 with typical self-deprecation. "I don't know anything, and I haven't learned." Yet in her memoir "Then Again," she offered this reflection: "I learned I couldn't shed light on love other than to feel its comings and goings and be grateful."

Diane Keaton was the author of several acclaimed books including "Let's Just Say It Wasn't Pretty" (https://amzn.to/3KQHjih), "Then Again" (https://amzn.to/43dMvmE), and "Brother & Sister: A Memoir" (https://amzn.to/48ZUWFY)
