The pumpkins are going in! Mr. P's Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Work Experience Class takes the lead on the pumpkin patch each year. They start the plants from seed indoors and then plant them in June. This year we're trying a special giant pumpkin variety. His class contributes so much to the farm!

This Wednesday our class had the opportunity to meet with students from Lafayette and Global Concepts who are part of the 4-H CAN group! Students discussed the food chain as well as the differences in fresh food availability in surrounding areas of erie county. 4-H students shared what they do at their school to contribute to agriculture, and East Aurora students gave them a tour of our very own farm!

We have too many laying hens! Help us give some of our hens a new home. We are selling approximately 20 Novogen Brown (almost identical to an Isa Brown) laying hens for sale to benefit our program and help us reduce our flock size. These hens are 18 months old, at the peak of their laying cycle, and looking for their next coop. All proceeds directly support our program. Please see the photos attached for how to buy a chicken!

Perfect timing on Earth Day to plant 60 new saplings for our tree farm south of the athletic fields! This is year 3 since we began this tree farm project and today we replaced any saplings that didn't survive last season and planted two new rows. Mr. Shelley gave a quick lesson on planting technique and spacing. We hope that we can be selling Christmas trees sometime in the 2030s! Each year our students have taken on a "pay it forward" mindset knowing that future students will benefit from their hard work. We hope to see some of them back to buy a Christmas tree from us for their future families (we'll be sure give them a discount!)

Our months-long project of raising turkeys culminated yesterday with an in-class thanksgiving feast! Our students planned the event and brought in all the side dishes and we baked everything with the help of our district food service provider, Personal Touch Food Service, Inc.. The centerpiece of the meal was our own pasture-raised turkey - one of 10 that we raised since June.

We received the turkey poults in the mail at 3 days old and raised them with our summer interns and class members until our processing field trip in late October. They challenged us with their intermittent squabbles, and knack for escape. They entertained us with their personalities and unison gobbles. We gave them a good life in fresh air, sunlight and all-you-can eat food and water and safety from predators. In return they provided us and 9 other families with a healthy and delicious meal for thanksgiving.

They helped us learn responsibility, empathy, patience and showed us the benefits of integrating livestock into a farm ecosystem. We even learned how to carve a turkey, how to make gravy from scratch and the difference between a conventional, convection and steam oven!

Thank you to our partners! East Aurora Educational Foundation, Inc. East Aurora Union Free School District (Erba Verde Farms for the processing)
