The Education Development and Community Engagement Graduate Student Association, or AEE GSA, is the social and professional organization for AEE students in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education at Penn State.

Leadership Training for Hispanic Farm Supervisors 14/01/2021

Two of our graduate students, Carolyn Henzi P and Daniel Robotham will present on this Leadership Training for Hispanic Farm Supervisors, a series of workshops in Spanish that will start this Friday 15th, followed by two other sessions on Friday 22th and 29th.
On Friday 22th, Carolyn Henzi P will present Managing Stress. This workshop will help participants develop strategies to deal with stress related to farm management. The workshop will also provide exercises and demonstrations of stress management techniques.

Friday 29th, Carolyn Henzi P will present Managing for Trust. Developing your management ability is a gradual process. It includes both formal training and practical experience.
Daniel Robotham will present a Mentoring Toolkit. This course is designed to give mentoring strategies in the context of leadership for supervisors.
Registration Fee is FREE!

This week, Mariah Stollar and Rose Gawryla defended their master’s projects. Mariah’s thesis was titled “Examining Factors Affecting Youth Value of Mindful Living and a Mindfulness Program Evaluation Among Participants at Pennsylvania and Ohio 4-H Camps.” Rose’s thesis was titled “Science Citizenship through Secondary Agricultural Education.” Mariah and Rose will graduate with an M.S. in May.

This month, the GSA had a group lunch outing at Hiway Pizza. The group also met yesterday to discuss conferences and collaboration opportunities to work with other graduate students. The GSA prides itself on being both a professional and social organization-we work hard, but also have fun!

This week's student spotlight is master's student Darius "Fuzzy" Williams-McKenzie. He completed his undergrad at Penn State in 2018 and his academic interest is in NPHC Organizations and its effects on Agriculture and Extension. A fun fact about Darius: he is a Beaver Stadium Jumbo tron camera man!

Our next student spotlight is PhD student Mallen Lamar Marlowe. Mallen is from Holden Beach, North Carolina. His hobbies include listening to music and learning languages. His research interests include Mentorship, Diversity Recruitment and Retention, and Program Development.

Mallen has a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and management from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and a master of science degree in agricultural education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

We are thankful for the expertise and enthusiasm you bring to our department, Mallen!

Our next student spotlight is Farhan Sadique. Farhan is a PhD student in Department of Workforce Education and Development, who is also working as a research assistant in Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education. He recently presented a research poster at the Penn State Rural Studies Student Conference in November 2019. He was also accepted for a peer reviewed poster presentation in AHRD International Conference in February, 2020 in Atlanta, GA. Farhan's research interests include Changes in Retail Business, Workforce Training and Development, Human Capital, and Impact of Technological Advancement.

Our next student spotlight is Katie Davenport. Katie is from McHenry, Illinois. She has research interests in program evaluation, implementation science, and technology-based interventions.

A fun fact about Katie... She loves to travel, cook (and eat!) and garden.

Katie had a busy summer and fall semester:
-She worked on analyses for her dissertation all summer.
-She collaborated on one article that was published (and a few others are under review): Aronson, K.R., Perkins, D.F., Morgan, N.R., Bleser, J.,Davenport, K., Vogt, D., Copeland, L.A., Finley, E. P., & Gilman, C. L. (2019). Going it alone: Post-9/11 veterans nonuse of healthcare and social service programs during their early transition to civilian life. Journal of Social Science Research. 1-14.
-She took a road trip through Ireland for 2-weeks for fun. The second photo is near Lauragh in the Beara Peninsula.
-She defended her dissertation this October.

Our next student spotlight is PhD student Joseph Cho. This is his first semester in the program. His research interests include International Agriculture, Program Development, Youth Development, and Program Evaluation.

When asked why he is excited to be part of AEE, he stated: "I am excited because it is a new adventure. New people, new setting, and new learning ,among other things."
