In the latest study published in the journal PLOS Global Public Health, researchers have shed further light on the phenomenon of low birth weight in Bangladesh, with the study revealing that nearly one in ten newborns in the country suffers from the condition. The study, which drew on data on over 5,300 births in the country, found that 9.15% of newborns weighed less than the healthy minimum of 2,500 grams. The study has also highlighted the fact that the phenomenon of low birth weight is not caused by any single factor but is the result of a complex mix of factors. Babies born in multiple-birth pregnancies, such as twins, are found to be over three times as likely to have low birth weight. In addition, cesarean delivery and other high-risk pregnancies are also associated with the condition.

Symptoms of Dengue: Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, and its initial symptoms are a high-grade fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, nausea, and sometimes a rash on the skin. Some people may also experience mild nosebleeds and gum bleeds. The signs of severe dengue are severe abdominal pain, vomiting, blood loss, severe weakness, and difficulty breathing, and one should seek medical help for these signs. What to Do When You Have Dengue: When a person is suspected to have dengue, they should drink a lot of water to stay hydrated, rest, and avoid taking medicine such as aspirin or ibuprofen unless advised to do so by a doctor, as this may increase the chances of blood loss.

A recent study reported that Bangladesh is currently experiencing a rapid nutrition and lifestyle transition. As a result, there is an increasing rate of overweight and obesity among children and young people. The study synthesizes recent evidence on the prevalence, determinants, and public health implications of childhood obesity in Bangladesh.

The prevalence of overweight among Bangladeshi children under 5 increased from 0.9% in 2000 to 2.4% in 2019, with a growth rate of approximately 166.67%. They observed the obesity rates for both boys and girls. Childhood obesity results in immediate psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, and can lead to physical health complications, including asthma and liver issues. It can lead to long-term risks for chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disorders, ultimately increasing the risk of disability and premature death.

Multiple factors, including rapid urbanization, shifting dietary patterns towards energy-dense foods, increasing purchasing power, physical inactivity, academic pressure, lack of awareness among parents, and inadequate policy implementation, contribute to this growing problem.

Evidence-based prevention strategies include accessible female-friendly physical activity opportunities, structured urban planning with sufficient recreational activities, raising maternal awareness about obesity risks, and including nutrition education in the school curriculum, which can prevent this before it becomes a national epidemic.

The 21st-century world's terrifying threat is non-communicable disease, which is preventable and caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Non-communicable diseases are responsible for three-quarters of global deaths annually. Diseases like heart disease, neoplasms, long-term lung disease, and diabetes are now the primary causes of death and illness worldwide.
According to the World Health Organization, 43 million people lose their lives every year, which is 75% of all deaths by NCD around the world. According to another report by WHO, the global percentage of premature death is rising, and 86% of premature deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries like Bangladesh.
These diseases are strongly linked to modifiable lifestyle risk factors, and these lifestyle choices can lead us to different types of noncommunicable diseases. It affects the human body gradually and over a long period of time. Several scientific articles have claimed that continuous unhealthy lifestyle choices and behavior are deeply linked to it. lack of physical activity, substance use, irregular sleep patterns, irregular diet and diet pattern, inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, excessive salt and sugar intake, soft drink consumption, screen time, etc. These lifestyle choices can influence and accelerate their progression and occurrence in our bodies. Young age is a mentionable phase of irregular lifestyle, which is responsible for developing NCD among the young population and premature deaths.
