Rumble is BACK! 💫 Now in its 14th installment, Rumble transforms AUD’s final reviews into an interactive installation and celebration–a stage and incubator for design dialogue and inquiry. The literal and intellectual juxtaposition of AUD’s creative output frames the Department’s broader interest in cross-pollination across disciplines, curiosities, and experiences. The show will be on view for UCLA students, staff, and faculty on Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7, 2022, 9 am to 6 pm. 🚨 PLEASE NOTE: capacity for the general public is limited; please learn more + register via link in bio.

Tune in over the coming days for a look behind the scenes, and check out our Stories on June 6 and 7 to follow along 🎉

BETWEEN WORLDS
Exploring new methods to conceive, create and represent interactive environmental narratives through immersive 'gaming' technology, students created environments where multiple worlds coexist. Investigations during the course commenced with visions of urbanism and the history and methods of representation and gaming. Students were introduced to basic concepts of generative design through the creation and subsequent combination of complex environments, to weave together narratives that span space.

The technology seminar “Get Ready For Rush Hour” taught by Shaun McCallum, looks directly at the implication of
digital technologies, the metaverse and emergent animate form
on urban architectures. Learning from digital material studies
and phygital compositions, projects will speculate on new
visual languages for an architecture rooted in a mixed-reality.
These novel visual languages will embody an architecture which
is never stagnant, always moving, irrespective of historical
comparative formal languages and always above 50mph.

By investigating familiar physical architecture and its formal
traits with non-traditional digital design languages we will
design phygital urban architectures that are procedurally
controlled and never stationary. We are currently confronted
with an architecture that needs a moment of critical self
reflection, as it is faced with the unfathomable speed in which
data and cultural software disseminates through the world of
tweets, Reels and Tik Tok loops to Discord discussions.
Through procedural, formal, material and texturing tools we
will design urban architecture and communicate our designs
through composited, looping animations and 3D printed object
tracking mixed-reality prototypes.

Project Title: Disjointed whole
This project is inspired by Ricardo Bofill’s La murala roja. Out of so many Architectural traits found in his building,  i.e., Space construction, Contrast with the surrounding environment, Continuity and Integrity, the three architectural trait_ Dynamism, Verticality and Movement + Levels are found to be the predominating ones. It’s fascinating to think how these traits are different from each other yet compliment and complete one another. This design philosophy leads to the idea for interlocking abstraction. Through this project we’ve tried to recreate the classical design language that is Minimalist yet Contemporary.

3D PRINTING LAB
This course by Curime Batliner is related to the Urban Studies Studio, where students study novel approaches to architecture and construction, aimed at the mitigation of negative effects caused by the heating climate. In support, this seminar takes a deep dive into the principles of 3D printing and develops a workflow that pairs six-axis industrial robots with a clay extrusion process.

Amazing new workflow for 3D printing clay developed by Curime in his new tech seminar using the robotics lab at the IDEAS campus. We can’t wait to see how the MS.AUD students from the Urban Strategy studio will apply this technology next! We’ll be watching! Congrats !!!

Join an ensemble of MSAUD-trained architects, computational designers, creative technologists, and digital experience designers in a conversation about professional wayfinding. This is an IDEAS alumni-guided tour through a variety of careers, pathways, and possibilities open to students after graduation. This symposium will be presented in a hybrid format: in-person attendance is open to UCLA ID holders and AUD alumni, while Zoom attendance is open to the general public, with registration required.

Speakers include:

Gesthimani Roumpani (MSAUD '20, Entertainment), Innovation Manager, Google R+D Lab for the Built Environment ( Construction)

Ebrahim Poustinchi (MSAUD '14, Mobility), Assistant Professor of Digital Design, Kent State University, and Founder/Director of KSU's Robotically Augmented Design Lab

Shareefa Abdulsalam (MSAUD '15, Urban Strategy), Senior Urban Designer/Planner, SCJ Alliance

Erik Broberg (MSAUD '17, Technology), Computational Designer, HKS Line Group

Moderated by AUD's Laure Michelon

Last week marked the return of in-person classes at IDEAS and the opening of "Currents," an exhibition of student work.

The show highlights the ongoing creativity, innovation, and experimentation undertaken by IDEAS students with the guidance and mentorship of our dedicated and accomplished faculty. It is at once a collection of what we have created together, and a view toward our students’ developing ideas for their futures as designers and instigators.
