Another lab day in Energy Fluids Processes Laboratory I 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

We explored how fluid flows through pipes, how energy is lost due to friction, and how components like diffusers affect pressure and velocity.

A big thank you to for this inspiring visit!

As part of the Sustainable Energy Systems lecture, students from the Bachelor’s program in Energy and Environmental Systems Engineering had the opportunity to visit the municipal waste incineration plant Renergia in Lucerne.

Visits like this are incredibly valuable: they inspire students, connect theory with practice, and help them better understand the real-world relevance and challenges of building sustainable systems.

One striking fact shared by Sabine Thürig:
the energy contained in a 5 kg bag of can charge a phone around 3’000 times on average.
This impressive number shows how much energy is still stored in our waste.

At the same time, it is an important reminder of the waste hierarchy: first reduce, then then — and only when no better option remains, recover energy through a waste-to-energy plant.

Yesterday, EESE students had the privilege of visiting .ch the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano. 🇨🇭

Mr Tiziano Belotti, Head of Facility Management, delivered an insightful presentation on how the data centre operates, with a strong focus on efficiency and its innovative water-cooling system.

🌱 Key Highlights:
⚡ Powered by 100% energy
💧 Lake water used for sustainable cooling
♻️ Waste heat partially recovered and reused
🖥️ Home to Alps, one of the world’s most advanced supercomputers

Ever wondered what an Energy Fluids Processes Laboratory I （EFPLAB1) lab day looks like?

In today’s lab exercise, students worked with a pedal pump system developed and supported by HSLU, and used in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to improve access to water.

After learning key concepts like the Bernoulli equation and mass conservation, students applied them through hands-on measurements with detailed explanations, and by drawing an energy diagram of the system.

Collecting solar energy where it’s most abundant ☀️

Students from programs at HSLU Technik & Architektur with travel to Ethiopia for a 2-week intensive course to apply their knowledge in practical ways alongside local residents.

During the first week, they delve deeply into the subject matter; the second week focuses on concrete implementation. This isn’t just about short-term solutions: the locals learn how to maintain and service solar systems so they function effectively in the long term.

For the students, this means more than just technology: they deepen their technical expertise, strengthen their soft skills, and gain valuable insights into the local culture and daily life. A true win-win situation.
