Story of Kuldip Singh Dhingra - The Paint Man of India ЁЯЗоЁЯЗ│

Meet the man who bought Vijay Mallya's company and built it into a 65,000 CR business.

1. Kuldip Singh Dhingra was interested in the family business. His grandfather had started a small paints import shop - Rajdoot Paints in Amritsar(1898). The shop was carried off wonderfully by Niranjan(Kuldip's father) until it came crashing down. ЁЯСЗ

2. Niranjan passed away after a stroke in 1957, and the ten-year-old Kuldip was left shocked. He came to Delhi to operate from a 15ft x 30 ft shed as he could not afford to pay the rent. Slowly and steadily, the business picked up, and Rajdoot needed Working capital.

3. No bank was willing to give a loan to a paint shop, let alone a teenager running it. So, Kuldip asked dealers to give money as "Deposits" and earn two percentage points higher than the bank. A 19-year-old had seen alternative financing, which many adults failed to see. ЁЯЩМ

4. The idea worked, and Rajdoot was grossing Rs 10 lakh sales in 1970. Kuldip bought a mansion in Delhi and became the new talk of the town. The business became so popular that it exported 20,000 tonnes to the Soviet Union. It even supplied White Enamel paints for the 1980 Olympics. Kuldip had everything right, but it all came crashing down again.ЁЯСЗ

5. By 1993, the Soviet Union disintegrated. The domestic business also suffered as the government increased excise on paints to 45% and import duties to 110%. Kuldip needed the hand of a big player. While searching for names, Vijay Mallya of UB Group came up.

6. Mallya had just bought the 200-year-old Lewis Berger Group. Although loss-making, the business was present in over four continents. Mallya wanted to exit to focus on airlines and spirits, and Kuldeep bought the brand for an estimated 150 CR. In 1991, Rajdoot Ltd became Berger Paints. ЁЯЪА

7. With new head office in Kolkata, Kuldip launched "Color bank tinting", allowing customers to choose from over 5000 colours. He also expanded to industrial paints and automotive coatings. As the paint market revived, new players like Tata's Nerolac and 100-year-old Shalimar Paints coloured the scene.

8. Kuldip had to step up тПй On 14 March 1996 - Berger India was listed on the stock market. Later, Nerolac went big with the "Shah Rukh Khan Nerolac" campaign in 2010, and Shalimar grew massively after its acquisition by the OP Jindal group. The battle wasn't over yet.

9. Berger Paints signed Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar in a campaign, "No Dhaag. No Dhaba. Only beautiful walls." The campaign became massively successful, and Berger Paints touched revenues of 4000 CR. It gained 2nd spot in India, after Asian Paints. ЁЯСС

10. In 2022, Berger Paints grew to a sales of 9000 CR, market cap of 65,00 CR and profit of 832 CR. It has over 50,000 dealers, 3500+ employees and a presence in 16 countries. It became the 2nd largest paint company in India and 4th largest in Asia. ЁЯТк

Meet the man who built Sagar Ratna into a 300 CR South Indian restaurant chain.

1. Jayaram Banan was born in Udupi, Karnataka. His father used to beat and torture him. He had flunked his exam once, and his father had put red chilli powder in his eyes.

2. He failed again and was not ready to face his father. 13-year-old Jayaram stole Rs 200 from his wallet and came to Mumbai without knowing what to do. A fellow resident saw him crying on the bus and offered him a job at the South Indian canteen in Panvel. ЁЯЩМ

3. The canteen was by the Udupi community. But, Jayaram was thrashed with slippers by his members. He used to be a waiter cm dishwasher and earnt only Rs 18 per month for this. Jayaram was not running away this time. ЁЯТк

4. In 6 years, he rose to become the manager. Jayaram started earning 200 Rs/month now. With more money, he wanted to open up his South Indian restaurant. But he realised Bombay was overcrowded by the Udupi, so he turned to Delhi in 1973. ЁЯСЗ

5. With an investment of just 5,000 rupees, he opened a 40-seater restaurant in Defense Colony, Delhi. On December 4, 1986 - Sagar was born. ЁЯЪА

6. Sagar made a 408 Rs sale on Day 1 but had to pay the rent of Rs 3250 for the entire week. Deep in losses, he never compromised on the quality of the food. His North Indian sambar became the best-serving sambar in Delhi. He wanted to take on the big guys - Haldirams and the ultra-famous Woodland. And it happened!ЁЯЩМ

7. Sagar Ratna removed Woodland from the 5-star Lodhi Hotel and became the new vendor. Jayaram invested Rs 50,000 in furniture, increased prices by 20% and decided to give the restaurant a premium name. Sagar became Sagar ratna Ratna in 1991. тЬЕ

8. In 1999, Sagar Ratna was in 35+ locations in North India. Jayaram also opened its first franchisee in Ludhiana's Hotel Maharaja Regency, against a fee of a whopping 60 Lakhs. ЁЯдп

9. In 2000, Sagar Ratna did Rs 12 crore, which doubled to Rs 25 crore in revenue in 2005. Franchises were coming like his sambar at the restaurant. To cater to the growing demand, Jayaram launched Swagath in 2001 to give their customers authentic seafood in addition to Sagar Ratna's south Indian tiffins.

10. Swagath beat the market leader Trishna in Bombay in just five years. Sagar Ratna scaled to 90 restaurants by 2011. Jayaram's spectacular success made Indian equity partners (IEP) buy 75% of his company for 180 CR.

11. By 2013, the deal turned sour, and Jayaram bought back the shares at 90 CR. Later, he expanded the business to hotels, industrial canteens, packaged snacks and ready-to-eat meals. Sagar Ratna became a 300 CR business and opened franchises in Canada, Singapore and Bangkok. ЁЯУЙ

12. The mighty Jayaram also opened a restaurant in the name of his abusive father in Karkala, Udupi. That restaurant still serves an entire South Indian meal at Rs 12.

He is rightly called the "Dosa King of India". ЁЯЗоЁЯЗ│
