Learn This LH Technique! Read👇
The first thing to understand is the mechanics of producing sound. Piano sound production is a function of the speed at which you strike the key, NOT how hard you press down. The greater the distance between your fingers and the keys, the greater potential velocity you’ll strike/depress the keys. This causes the hammers inside the piano to respond by striking the strings quicker, making a bigger sound.
Now, based on this principal if you keep your fingers close to the keys (best in contact with the keys) you minimize the velocity at which you strike the keys. Thus, a softer sound is created. By doing this on beats 2 and 3, coupled with an accented first beat, a defined waltz beat is created.
This technique also helps create an even sounding 2nd and 3rd beat. It’s no good to have a soft 2nd beat but a strong 3rd beat. Or worse, inconsistently soft vs loud 2nd and 3rd beats between measures!
Note: This technique is good to use, but doesn’t always work similarly across pianos. It partially depends on the piano’s action, responsiveness, and regulation – no amount of good technique can compensate for a poorly regulated action.
Always remember, for a waltz we’re aiming for the LH to be Strong-Weak-Weak 👌

I'm a bit late celebrating Fall (my fave season!), so here's Tchaikovsky's October from his 'The Seasons' piano suite.
Each month in the suite is represented by a piece portraying an image/event for that time of year. Some of them are popularized more than others (I.e. June "Barcarolle").
I love the simplicity, quietness of October, a melancholy piece for the start of starkness that will soon come in Winter.
