Feeling the overwhelmed with gratitude to have been able to share knowledge on how to best support student’s with Down syndrome to California school psychologists at Convention 2024. And so proud of my graduate students for joining me on this adventure. The feedback and engagement from the attendees was so incredible. NASP Convention, here we come!

My school psychology students and I put together a presentation to build educational and mental health practitioner knowledge and capacity around strength- based mindset for ‘s Mental & Behavioral Heath Conference. We loved seeing the engagement of the audience and hearing the positive feedback.

Strength-based and independently practicing educational psychologist adventure…

The weekend afforded me an incredible experience of not only brought me a once in a lifetime experience of flying along the coast of California in this plane, but to see my client’s strengths shine.

I was witness to seeing my client utilize realtime problem solving, care for passengers, recall of information, and interpretation of aviation language. They demonstrated complex systems of knowledge and higher order thinking. All of which is connected to their learning and valuable information for their educational and post- transition planning and life.

This student’s knowledge is not measured best in a traditional way, and fitting into the box of school has been an area where their entire support team has needed to think creatively and seeks support in understanding and developing.

This experience reminded me that when we cultivate opportunities for individuals to demonstrate strengths, nurture their interests, and feel value, we see them for who they are.

I know this particular experience is not one that all children can access, but as educators we need to continue to push ourselves to think outside of the box and support our students to shine. Let’s continue to challenge the systems that limit our students and give them access to individualized experiences that nurture who they are🩵
