On International Literacy Day

Anyone who is truly committed to development in society understands that human capital development is central to all other efforts, being a major driver of every other factor.

Each of us must commit to eradicating or reducing to barest minimum the rate of illiteracy in our society. We must help support every initiative that aims to educate, orientate, create awareness or bring information to people. Without this, all other efforts towards a better society will only result in waste of time and resources.

If you can, support someone to have formal education. However little you can do, an effort to improve knowledge is one of the greatest gifts you can offer any human being. An educated fellow is an empowered individual.

Importantly also, we should appreciate those who are committed to reducing illiteracy in our world. Teachers, tutors, lecturers, trainers or whatever the nomenclature we give them; those who are in the business of impacting knowledge perform one of the finest jobs on earth - honour them. Appreciate a teacher today. They help us move our world forward.

It's International Literacy Day! Do your own bit. Together, let us commit to making a difference in our world by reducing illiteracy.

The Chief of the Drums

This is a captivating story of a young man who overreaches himself and pitches himself against the community. It resounds with traditional wisdom about the destruction which arises from the delusion and pride. Igudia dramatizes that point that "pride goes before a fall". The moral emerges through the gradual unfolding of the drama of the narrative. The children's imagination will be revitalized by the setting and diction of the text which essentially capture the spirit of the Nigerian traditional society currently under threat of extinction from the cultural incursions of globalization. The narrative style and characterization echo Achebe's Arrow of God.
