True story. ❤️

For those of you who don't know me (teachalife author), I have been working as a teacher assistant for 1 year now in the Netherlands. Today is the start of our 6 week holiday and a well deserved rest.
I have learnt a few things this year:
- Relationships are key to being a good teacher. You can tell me all you want about subjects/content taking priority but if you do not bond with your students, you are bound to fail.
- I have taught many curriculums, they come and go and change everywhere all the time...not one is perfect and some students do not fit in any.
- Critical thinking as a priority in this system of education is refreshing. Instead of asking questions, let the students do the asking and researching. Be open to learn new things.
- SEN students struggle here, there are not many options for International immigrants who do not speak Dutch.
- On the other hand, it is nice to see a country so proud of their language and wanting to have all students speak it fluently.
- Kids are kids and this is probably why I will do this forever, I love how I can bond with a Zulu child from Durban as well as a Japanese child from Tokyo or even a 17 year old Spanish student from South America.
- Teachers everywhere are a special type of person!
To all the SA teachers, enjoy your last weekend before school starts. You are amazing, your skills are next level and not everyone can do what you can! 💜

It's all about building relationships.
They often take less than 2 minutes, yet can dramatically impact student-behavior (and it makes their parent's day).

I strongly believe this! Our perception of a child should not influence how think about that child academically.
Always remember that perception is reality to students. How we make them feel matters. 🙌
