Our last day in OWLS brought reflections about how OWLS changed us and how we changed OWLS. The kids told me that they have learned to encourage each other and collaborate by spending time in OWLS.

They tell me they’ve changed OWLS by clearing out invasive species, building (and rebuilding) bridges, and by making hideouts in trees. We are all grateful for this wonderful space.

We learned about lobsters 🦞 when the grandfather of a student came to school. He showed us how the trap works, the difference between male and female lobsters, the rules lobstermen follow, and a trick to put a lobster to sleep.

Then my student’s older brother talked to us about his experience with lobstering. The kids were completely engaged. We had a wonderful time with our lobstering family.

We spent the day reflecting about our trip to The Ecology School. The kids walked from chart to chart adding their takeaways from the lessons, dorms, recreation time and the meals.

This work is going to be made into thank you packages for our sponsors. Our community stepped up to provide the funds we needed and the kids are off to a great start on thanking them.

It took a day to recover, but I’m so glad we were able to take fourth grade to The Ecology School for three days. The kids were in their glory learning from the best educators.
They had lessons about our place in space, nighttime adaptations, watersheds, geology, and producers, consumers and decomposers. Skits, songs, dance parties, and games were used to instruct. I learned so much from watching the educators.
When we return to school, we will do a deep dive into all the kids learned as we write to the many sponsors who made this trip possible. I can’t wait to hear all of their takeaways.
