Traditional Karate-do Academy at UMN traces it’s origin to the late Sensei Robert Fusaro who started teaching traditional karate-do at the University of Minnesota in 1967. Sensei Robert Fusaro learned traditional karate-do when he was in the army serving in Japan after the Korean war. after his tour in Japan, sensei Fusaro started teaching at the University of Minnesota. He then continued his trai
ning under the guidance of Master Hidetaka Nishiyama until his death in 2019. After the death of Sensei Robert Fusaro, sensei Trung Le continues Fusaro and Nishiyama’s teaching at the University of Minnesota and for the students at Traditional Karate-do Academy at UMN sports club. The club is the only sports club on the campus of the University of Minnesota where traditional karate-do students learn the purpose, philosophy, mental and physical aspect of karate-do taught by both Master Nishiyama and Sensei Fusaro. Our teaching emphasizes self development, fusing mind and body, along with karate techniques based on scientific principles. The club is a member of the American Amateur Karate Federation (AAKF) representing traditional karate-do clubs throughout the United States. The AAKF was founded by Master Hidetaka Nishiyama in 1979 to promote the teaching of traditional karate-so based on scientific principles. The AAKF is a member of the World Traditional Karate-do Federation (WTKF) promoting the karate principles of Master Nishiyama throughout the world. Being a member of the AAKF, club member’s ranks are automatically recognized by the AAKF and WTKF. Club members can also participate in regional tournaments, national championships, and world tournaments representing the United States. Also, club members get access to seminars (mini camps) taught by senior senseis from the AAKF and expand their learning and understanding of traditional karate-do.
