On February 22nd, Guruji Shri Supriyo Maitro presented an afternoon raag - Raag Bhimpalasi - at the Heritage Thakurdalan of Khelat Ghosh Bhavan.

Guruji began with a Vilambit laya (Slow tempo) alap slowly unravelling the strands of the raag. This was followed by a Madhya laya alap (Jod in medium tempo) with his signature use of the Gamak in the rendition of the raaga which then gave way to the Drut laya alap (Jhala - in fast tempo) in complex rhythmic patterns.

The Alap was followed by a traditional pada (composition) in Chautaal (12 matra), based on the theme of Raas-Leela describing the beauty of Lord Krishna.

Guruji's Dhrupad performance was highly appreciated by the members of the audience who were listening with attention throughout the span of the entirety of performance - from the initial meditative alap till the concluding upaj (improvisation) of the pada.

We feel privileged that we were able to witness such an elaborate performance of Dagar-Vani Dhrupad vocal music and are hopeful that we would be lucky enough to witness more of such performances.

We are grateful to the organisers for organising an afternoon dedicated to the decadence of Dhrupad sangeet.
