Instr. Ma. Dulce L. Alibangbang of the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Visayas State University Tolosa, was among the Visayas State University delegates to the 8th University Consortium (UC) Faculty Forum held at Maejo University, Chiang Mai, Thailand, on July 27–28, 2026.

Carrying the forum theme, "IWA: Intelligent Wellbeing Agriculture toward Sustainable Development," Instr. Alibangbang presented her research entitled, "From Waste to Wellness: Functional Characterization and Application of Chitosan Biopolymers for Sustainable Tropical Beverage Innovation and Vibrio Control."

The UC Faculty Forum convened faculty members, researchers, industry representatives, and development practitioners from University Consortium member institutions across Southeast Asia and partner universities. The two-day forum provided a venue for presenting research outputs, exchanging scientific knowledge, strengthening inter-university collaboration, and discussing innovations that contribute to sustainable agriculture and community development.

The forum was supported by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), which promotes regional research collaboration and capacity building among higher education institutions. Instr. Alibangbang's participation in the international forum was fully funded through the event support program and Visayas State University.

Earning an outstanding 1.149 General Weighted Average (GWA), Bachelor of Science in Fisheries student Jomari Z. Tubigan is set to become the first-ever summa cm laude of Visayas State University Tolosa, marking a historic milestone for the institution.

The historic achievement places Tubigan among the institution's top-performing graduates and marks the first time the highest Latin academic honor has been awarded on the campus.

Aside from his exceptional academic performance, Tubigan also gained recognition for his undergraduate thesis on the use of shrimp shell-derived chitosan to improve the quality and shelf life of tuna meat. The study received the Best Undergraduate Thesis in Post-Harvest Fisheries, Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis in Fisheries, and he claimed the Best Presenter award.

Tubigan described the achievement as both an honor and a humbling experience, saying the recognition reflects not only his efforts but also the sacrifices of those who supported him throughout his academic journey.

“Being the first summa cm laude of VSU Tolosa is greatly humbling for me, considering not just my efforts alone but the collective sacrifices of the people behind this distinction,” Tubigan shared

According to Tubigan, the milestone came after years of hard work, including sleepless nights during examinations, demanding schedules, and long hours spent in laboratories to complete academic requirements.

“Achieving this milestone came with sleepless nights during finals, hectic schedules and deadlines that go along with exams,” he said. “I sacrificed a lot of time in laboratories even at night just to finish our course requirements," he added.

Tubigan added that overcoming self-doubt and fear of failure was among the challenges he faced while pursuing academic excellence.

As the campus' first summa cm laude, he said he hopes his achievement will inspire younger students to remain persistent despite setbacks and pressure.

“I hope that I can be an inspiration to students from lower years of VSU Tolosa, encouraging them to remain persistent despite setbacks and pressure,” he said.

Tubigan also encouraged students to believe in their capabilities, pursue their goals with faith, and appreciate the friendships and personal growth gained throughout college.

Despite the expectations that come with the distinction, Tubigan said he remains grounded and views the recognition as an opportunity to continue improving himself.

He likewise expressed gratitude to the university, faculty members, and classmates who became part of his four-year journey in the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries program.

Tubigan's record-setting 1.149 GWA and award-winning research not only secured his place in VSUT history but also established a new benchmark for future generations of students aspiring for academic excellence.
