Richard Soo (right), Retired Fire Captain and Founder of the Oahu Fire Prep Academy, and Curtis Aiwohi, Retired Fire Captain, inspire us with their work training aspiring firefighter recruits. Richard started what is now known as the Oahu Fire Prep Academy 15 years ago. What started in his garage with 5 students has now become a program that helps 1,500 students. Through the program, about 10% of their students gain full employment in the Fire Department. With help from other retired firefighters like Curtis, Richard has been able to give back to the department and help to get the best-of-the-best working for the community. Years ago, Richard experienced a fire at his home. Though all his belongings were destroyed, Richard was able to move forward knowing that his sons had been saved. Richard is inspired by the people who want to help benefit the community and want to help in his goal of helping the proper people become firefighters. Curtis is inspired by seeing students grow, and the “proud-parent” moment when you see them get their uniforms. Local academy helps nearly 100 potential recruits prepare for firefighter exam The Oahu Prep Academy had about 90 men and women sign up to take their practice exam on Saturday.
