Inorganic reactions part -1: Chapter-3(Class-XI)
Concept of Shielding effect & Effective Nuclear charge at ease:
First of all, considering a hydrogen atom which contains only one proton(+ve charged sub atomic particle) in it’s nucleus and an electron(-ve charged sub atomic particle) on it’s 1st orbit. So, the attraction force of nucleus on its outermost electron is almost 100℅, due to the absence of any orbit between the nucleus and 1st orbit.
Well, now considering another one like Sodium atom comprises with a +ve nucleus and 3 orbit containing -ve electrons.
Now, think what is happening with the last electron.
Here, will the attraction force Between nucleus and the last electron of sodium be 100%?
No. As there are 2 orbits present containing electrons between the nucleus and the outermost orbit.
So, some repulsion forces will act on the outermost electron of sodium by the electrons presenting in 1st and 2nd orbits.
As a consequence of repulsive force on the last electron, the attraction force of nucleus will not be equal to 100℅, It will be less than 100%.
This effect is known as shielding effect & the nuclear charge due to shielding is called effective nuclear charge.
If effective nuclear charge is considered as 'Z(eff)', and shielding constant as 'S',
Then, Z(eff) = Z - S,
Where, Z is atomic number.
