Robin Rothenberg
interviewed by Alice Bentley
This book offers an educational guide for yoga teachers and therapists to assess pranayama techniques in the context of the physiologic impact they have on the body. This well-researched text provides insight into how dysregulated breathing patterns can negatively impact not just the respiratory system, but all the systems, throw off our pH, and limit our capacity to think clearly.
In addition to the deep dive into the western science of respiratory physiology, Restoring Prana also references many of the ancient yoga texts regarding pranayama. One of the most startling revelations Robin made in her research is that pranayama refers to kumbhaka – the state of breath suspension and or retention, not the movement of inhalation and exhalation. The capacity to extend kumbhakha provides the practitioner with the many health benefits associated with consistent practice. Robin then helps us understand that the only way we can actually increase our capacity to suspend the breath is by training ourselves to breathe less not more. She warns that the popular trend of big breathing in yoga classes takes us in the opposite direction of true pranayama, and can compromise our health leading to further imbalance.
