I am so happy to begin our documentary series and showcasing Jamaica and Tamarindo. The jamaica flower and tamarindo are iconic ingredients in Mexico, but their history comes from a place much further away. In the documentary, we meet five people to explore African heritage in Mexico, an identity that goes beyond the color of one’s skin.

Arturo Schomburg, a Black Puerto Rican scholar and collector of Black material culture, was born in 1874. Soon after moving to New York City in 1891, he started participating in local Cuban and Puerto Rican independence movements. After 1898, Schomburg deepened his involvement in African American social and intellectual life. He pushed the concept of a global African diaspora. Today, his collections are housed at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library in Harlem.
