In a once-in-a-lifetime sighting, a baby crocodile was discovered with a tail shaped more like a mermaid’s fin than the powerful weapon of a predator.

This rare congenital defect completely alters the tail’s structure, and in some cases, crocodiles are even born with no tail at all. While these mutations can be beautiful to see, they also strip the animal of the very feature it relies on most — its swimming power, hunting ability, and even vital fat reserves for survival.
