English Teaching Internship Initiative - ETII Morocco The ETII provides English BA holders across Morocco with pedagogical instruction, professional exper

The English Teaching Internship Initiative (ETII) began as an offshoot of the ALC’s Community Service Club (CSC) in 2015. ALC volunteers were giving weekly English classes to students at a handicrafts center in Fez. However, with too many students and too few volunteers, the ALC’s CSC couldn’t keep up. Hence the idea was hatched to meet this need by bringing in Moroccan English Master’s students f

rom Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (SMBAU) to supplement the work of the ALC volunteers. This proved to be a win-win for everyone involved: 60 handicraft students were assured free weekly English lessons, and 4 Master’s students (many hoping to be English teachers one day) benefited from this unique professional development experience. In 2016, the ETII won a generous grant from the US State Department to build on its success by expanding the scope of its mission to train 30 English Master’s and PhD students in Fez. the ETII put 30 English BA holders through its 60 hour all-expenses paid teacher-training program with a 100% graduation rate. Following their training, these trainees were dispatched as English teacher-interns to 8 different vocational schools in low-income neighborhoods around Fez to put in place free English programs. In total, just over 800 students were reached, among them handicraft students, sub-Saharan immigrants, orphans, and teenagers preparing for the Baccalaureate. Following a ladder-based system of incentives, many trainees went beyond the minimum 36-hour volunteer commitment to teach up to 108 hours. All in all, the 2016-2017 ETII cohort carried out 1,872 hours of volunteer English classes in Fez communities at an average of 62.4 hours per trainee. Lastly, working with its partners at the US Embassy Rabat, the ETII carried out special programs to help its beneficiaries, notably sending 2 trainees to the International TESOL Convention in Seattle and running a summer camp at an orphanage. Now with a 2017-2018 cohort of 80 trainees based at ALCs in Fez, Meknes, Oujda, Casablanca, Rabat, Kenitra, and Tangier, in addition to partnerships with the Ministry of Handicrafts, Ministry of Higher Education, the American Cultural Association, and the US Embassy Rabat, the ETII has grown into a national program aiming to expand English language education to thousands.

Very happy to share this wonderful video portraying the professional development of our colleague Oumaima Tabich.

The video showcases three important initiatives offered at the American Language Center Rabat:

-When Oumaima was an ETII Rabat trainee, she got her first teaching experience by teaching Moroccan artisans English, thanks to our convention with the Moroccan Ministry of Handicraft.

-After finishing the ETII program, Oumaima started teaching at the ALC Rabat and participating in our self-directed professional development program for teachers, which is based on a position paper published by Oxford University Press.

-Oumaima is now a full time teacher at our center, and teaches a wide range of age groups and levels. In the video, she is teaching a ‘young adults’ class, a program we launched in 2024.

Thank you to Oxford University Press English Language Teaching for providing us with high quality research papers and inspiration for our PD program!
