For many people, acts of terrorism that deliberately target innocent civilians are among the most serious crimes imaginable. Supporters of the death penalty argue that those responsible for such attacks deserve the harshest possible punishment. They believe severe penalties can deliver justice to victims and send a strong message against terrorism.

Others, however, argue that even in the most serious cases, life imprisonment without parole is a more appropriate punishment. Human rights organizations and legal experts in many countries have raised concerns about the irreversible nature of capital punishment and the possibility of judicial errors.

In India, the death penalty already exists but is generally reserved for the “rarest of rare” cases, including certain terrorism-related offenses and exceptionally grave crimes. Courts evaluate each case based on evidence, circumstances, and legal standards before determining an appropriate sentence.

The broader debate is not only about punishment but also about justice, deterrence, public safety, and the rule of law. Different people hold strong views on both sides of the issue.

Do you think India should continue using the death penalty for terrorism-related convictions, or should another form of punishment be preferred?
