Today, we celebrate the energy, ideas, and contributions of young people around the world who continue to shape the communities they are part of.

Observed every August 12, International Youth Day was established by the United Nations to draw attention to issues affecting young people and to recognize their contributions to society. It serves as an opportunity to highlight the importance of meaningful youth participation in creating inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable communities.

In the Philippines, where young people make up a significant part of the population, youth participation can be seen in classrooms, community initiatives, volunteer work, creative spaces, research, advocacy, and public service. From raising awareness about issues that affect their communities to developing ideas and solutions of their own, Filipino youth continue to demonstrate that being young does not mean being incapable of making a difference.

This yearโ€™s celebration reminds us that youth should not only be viewed as beneficiaries of change, but as active participants in creating it. Every question raised, perspective shared, and initiative started can contribute to a community that listens to and makes space for its younger generation.

Let us continue to learn, participate, create, and speak with purpose. After all, a generation does not shape its future by simply waiting for itโ€”it shapes it by taking part in the present.

Today, we celebrate one of the biggest and most amazing animals on Earthโ€”the elephant! World Elephant Day gives us a chance to appreciate these gentle giants and learn more about them. From their big ears and long trunks to their strong family bonds, elephants have many things that make them special.

Elephants are smart, social, and caring animals. They live in family groups, look after their young, and communicate with each other in different ways. Their strong bonds with their families show just how caring and connected these gentle giants can be.

Elephants also play an important part in their natural homes. They spread seeds when they eat fruits, and create paths as they walk. These are some of the ways elephants help shape the places where they live. So this World Elephant Day, letโ€™s appreciate these amazing animals and do our part to protect them and their homes.

According to the ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐”๐ง๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž (IUCN), lions (Panthera leo) are classified as ๐•๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž, and they now occupy only about 7.4% of their historic range which is roughly 1.57 million kmยฒ, around 36% less territory than in 2002.

This decline is not happening without a cause. Farms, roads, and expanding settlements are breaking up lion habitats, while the loss of wild prey pushes lions closer to livestock and increases conflict with communities. At the same time, snares used for bushmeat can injure or kill lions, while the illegal trade in lion bones, claws, teeth, and skins adds another pressure to already-fragmented populations.

Yet, today, August 10, also shows that conservation can work. In India, the Asiatic lion population increased from 523 in 2015 to an estimated 891 in 2026. In Tanzaniaโ€™s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, recorded lion killings fell from 13 in 2016 to zero by 2021 after community-based efforts involving lion guardians and conservationists. In Senegalโ€™s Niokolo-Koba National Park, the West African lion population increased from roughly 10โ€“15 lions in 2017 to about 30, alongside an approximately 80% decrease in poaching.

But recovery is more than simply counting more lions. Isolated populations can suffer from inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity, while habitat fragmentation prevents lions from moving freely, finding mates, and maintaining healthy populations. As Earth.com puts it, the real question is whether these recoveries can last and whether lions can continue breeding and surviving in the landscapes they have left.

This World Lion Day, let us look beyond the image of the โ€œking of the jungle.โ€ The lion is not invincible. Its survival depends on protecting habitats, restoring prey populations, reducing human-lion conflict, stopping illegal wildlife trade, and keeping conservation efforts strong for the long term.

Today, ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐Ÿ—, we celebrate the ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐โ€™๐ฌ ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ข๐ ๐ž๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ. This is a day dedicated to recognizing the cultures, identities, knowledge, and rights of Indigenous Peoples around the world.

But can we truly celebrate this day while Indigenous communities are still forced to fight for the protection of the land they have called home for generations?

In Sitio Tibag, Barangay Naugsol, Subic, Zambales, an open dumpsite was established within the ancestral domain of the Aeta Ambala community. According to reports and the I-Witness documentary Ibinasurang Paraiso, the site began operating in 2019 and continued for years despite environmental concerns and regulatory action. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) had found the operation to be in violation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, while a Senate resolution has called for an investigation into who should be held accountable and how the area can be rehabilitated.

What was once a forest and part of the communityโ€™s environment became a place where tons of household and medical waste accumulated. Indigenous residents reported foul odors, an increase in flies, and concerns over contaminated water sources. The documentary also showed a stream near the dumpsite where waste could be carried by flowing water. For an Indigenous community that depends on the land and its natural resources for food, water, livelihood, and daily life, the destruction of the environment is also a threat to their way of life.

We need to question where our waste goes, who is affected by it, and who is expected to bear the consequences of our failures in waste management.

It is deeply concerning when a forestโ€”an ecosystem that should be protectedโ€”is treated as a convenient solution to a waste problem. Even more concerning is when the people living on that land have to raise their voices before the environmental damage receives national attention.

Although the dumpsite has been ordered to close and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) has recommended its immediate and inclusive rehabilitation, closure alone does not erase years of environmental damage. Rehabilitation must mean restoring the land, addressing possible contamination, protecting water sources, and ensuring that the Aeta community is meaningfully involved in decisions concerning their ancestral domain.

We cannot fully celebrate Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day while ignoring what is happening to Indigenous lands.

Ancestral land is not a dumpsite. A forest is not a waste facility. And Indigenous communities should never have to sacrifice their environment for the convenience of others.

Protect the environment. Protect ancestral lands. Protect Indigenous rights.

Last June 21, the ๐๐Œ๐‚๐‡๐’ ๐˜๐„๐’-๐Ž proudly participated in ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ‘ of the ๐‹๐„๐€๐ƒ ๐†๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” ๐–๐ž๐›๐ข๐ง๐š๐ซ ๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž, marking another meaningful step in strengthening our knowledge, leadership, and commitment to environmental action.

Through Session 1: Leading the Green Movement: Developing Environmental Leaders, we learned about the qualities and responsibilities of effective environmental leaders. The session emphasized that meaningful change begins with individuals who are willing to inspire others, take initiative, and lead with purpose toward a more sustainable future.

Meanwhile, Session 2: Leading Environmental Action: Turning Vision into Details, highlighted the importance of transforming environmental goals and ideas into concrete and meaningful actions. Participants were encouraged to move beyond awareness by developing practical steps that can create positive change within their communities.

The ๐๐Œ๐‚๐‡๐’ ๐˜๐„๐’-๐Ž extends its sincere appreciation to LEAD Central Luzon - League of Environmental Advocates and Defenders and ๐‹๐„๐€๐ƒ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ for initiating this meaningful webinar series and providing young environmental advocates with opportunities to learn, connect, and grow as leaders.

Have you ever stopped to think about where a plastic bottle goes after you throw it away? Or how many single-use plastics we consume in just one ordinary day? From bottled drinks and snack wrappers to disposable utensils and plastic bags, these small items may seem harmless, but when combined, they create a lasting impact on our environment.

This ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐…๐ซ๐ž๐ž ๐‰๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฒ, let's remind ourselves that protecting the planet doesn't always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it begins with the simplest decisions we make every day. Refusing a plastic straw, bringing your own tumbler, or using a reusable lunch box may feel like a small inconvenience, but these actions become meaningful when thousands of students choose to do the same.

As members of our school community, we all have a role to play in creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable campus. Every classroom, hallway, and school ground reflects the choices we make. By reducing our dependence on single-use plastics, we are not only helping protect nature but we are also setting an example of responsibility and care for future generations.
