So I have been watching the trends in literacy in our local public schools and I am seeing a very scary reality. I call it the "pin it on" problem. What do I mean by that? When school administrators, teachers, and even parents see declining literacy rates, it is easy to say things like, "COVID really affected this group of students" or "This student has a July birthday, so they are really young, let's give them more time." The scariest "pin it on" I have heard is, "They won't qualify for additional support because so many kids are behind, so why bother making the referral." What I am seeing is schools buying new "Science of Reading" curriculums when their previous curriculums were based on the Science. Teachers being told what was working in their classrooms can no longer be used. Parents being told misinformation about what "to do" and "NOT to do" with kids at home. What we need to do is stop trying to "pin" the problem on something and start understanding that students today learn differently than they did just 5-10 years ago. Technololgy has changed the face of education, but is not a solution for everyone. Regardless of the curriculum, the state of the world, the student's disabilty (diagnosed or undiagnosed) we need to teach to the child and adapt our teaching to fit their needs. So parents, teachers, administators let's stop waiting to see if things are going to get better and give our students the additional support they need in and out of school. The earlier they receive intervention, the easier it is to close the gap. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money, it doesn't require buying resources, but it does require some creative thinking, creative scheduling, and teachers that want to help these students. And for families that want additional support outside of school, we have a team of teachers here to help.
