Chanel College Weekly Updates: Week 5 - Term 3

Admin Briefs:
This is the fifth week of Term 3. The focus is on the coverage of the Syllabus. The teachers and the students have been urged to divert all our attention and focus on the coverage of the syllabus.
A key activity this week was the Parents and Teachers Interviews. This is a key strategy for improving the learning outcomes for the students.

Weekly Eucharist:
We continue to draw strength from the weekly celebration of the Mass. We all know that this is the base of all our activities at the college.
It's heartwarming to witness the dedication of the teachers and students, as they prepare well for the liturgies.

New Residence for the Marist Fathers:
We're preparing for the blessing and opening of the new residence for the Marist Fathers next Friday. His Grace has kindly accepted our humble request to do the honours!
His Grace will lead the Mass and then followed by the rituals of the blessings.

To prepare for the occasion, some beautification works are currently undergoing. The planting of banana crops and flowers around the new house.
The Electricity Department has been doing some work to connect the power to the new house.

Marist Laity Convention:
Fr,Mika Tuimavave is accompanying a group of youth from Samoa to the event in Suva, Fiji. They appear to be enjoying the event. They will be returning tomorrow.

Special Visitor:
I had the honour of meeting an ex-scholar of the college at Amaile on Sunday. Mr.Joe Fluen was a renowned athlete during his time at Chanel. He spoke fondly of his years at the college, which started in 1969.

Personal Hobby:
Our teachers are very fond of the Indian Curry that the Principal cooks! Hence, this hobby of mine from Fiji is enjoyed by the teachers. The only problem is that I had to skip my class in order to cook the curry!

Conclusion:

Chanel College Weekly Updates: Week 4 - Term 3

Admin Briefs:
The focus for this week was twofold: Firstly, the college is diverting all our energies and attention to the classrooms, as we plough on with our Coverage of the syllabus!
Secondly, the teachers are wrapping up their exam marking. Once the marking is done, we'll prepare our School Reports for the Teachers-Parents Interview on Monday.

School Assembly:
The school assembly is an important event at the beginning of each week. Each class is rostered to lead the assembly. This is an opportunity for the students at all levels to practice standing from the front and lead the whole school. Since it's done in English, it's an ideal forum for the students to practise their English!

School Mass:
The Mass this week was led by Fr.Robert and the Year 9/1 students. Frs.Mika and I attended the Requiem Mass for the late Principal of Don Bosco Technical School.
Even though some of us may be tied up with other commitments, we make sure that the weekly Eucharist is celebrated. We believe that the Eucharist is the foundation for the life and activities of the college.

Agriculture Students:
Our Agriculture students are beginning to see the fruits of their hard labour! The veges are coming up; some will be ready soon for harvest!

National Under 18 Rugby:
Chanel College has a lone student in the national U18 Rugby Team! Seminalio was the skipper of the college senior Team. We wish him all the best for the upcoming Tour of Australia.

Maletino:
One of our teachers has just returned from India. Maletino was in India for a month and was helping with the medical treatment of his Mother-in-Law.
He was very generous by shouting lunch for the ever-hungry teachers of Chanel!!

Chanel College Upgrade Project:
The CCUP is progressing well! The focus now is renovating the classrooms! You can see from the photos that the newly furnished classrooms are beautiful. It's such a joy to see the smiling face of the teachers and students enjoying their face-lift classrooms!

Marist Youth Gathering:
Thirteen youth from the Marist Parish of Lepea will be traveling to Fiji this Sunday. They'll join other Marist youth from Oceania as they gather for the one week activities.
Fr.Mika is accompanying the youth. Among the group is the Secretary for the college, Ms.Seneueta Fili, and Chris, an Assistant Teacher for the college.

Chanel College Weekly Updates: Week 3 - Term 3

May I warmly welcome you all to this week's updates.

Admin Briefs:
The focus this week has been the completion of the Mid-Year Exams, which ended on Tuesday. The students were given a day off on Wednesday to recover! The teachers gathered at the college to start marking the exams.
We prepared a special lunch for the teachers. It was a chance for me to cook my favourite Indian curry. I told the teachers that I usually put 50 chillies in the curry but this time I put only 20! Anyway, they thoroughly enjoyed the lunch!

Weekly Mass:
it was an ideal opportunity to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving today to thank the Lord for the many blessings bestowed upon the college during the exams.
Another important intention for the Mass was the upcoming Father's Day for Samoa! Hence, we honoured all our male teachers and sought special blessings upon them.

Father's Day Celebration:
There's something new that I learn in Samoa almost every day, apart from the language! The Samoan government has allocated three Public Holidays to honour Father's, Mother's, and Children's Day! They do away with other traditional public holidays! Well done Samoa!
At the school day, there was a special presentation of gifts, speeches, and dances to mark the occasion. It was really wonderful to witness the joyful spirit and gestures accorded to the male teachers.
A special lunch was also served for the male teachers! The female staff have raised the bar to another level!

PTA Fundraising:
The Parents-Teachers Association held its first fundraising drive last night at the RSL Club in town. The teachers were there to show their support.
I always believe that the PTA plays a pivotal role in the operations of the college.

Agriculture Science:
The Agriculture students continue to expand their vegetable gardens. It's really affirming to see the students enjoying the planting of veges and fruit trees around the college.
Thanks to Faalilo and Pita, the agriculture project is thriving!

Special Visitor!
The Principal of St.Pats Town in Wellington, Mr.Mike Savali visited the college yesterday. He had a chance to address the whole school. This also lays a good foundation for a reciprocal relationship between the two schools.
Both schools go a fair way back in their history. Chanel College is a brainchild of the New Zealand Marists. The first Principal was Fr.Doherty, a former pupil of St.Pats.
Mr.Savali was also surprised to find out that I'm a former pupil of St.Pats. What goes around comes around!

Chanel College Weekly Updates: Week 2 - Term 3

Admin Briefs:
The focus this week is our Mid-Year Exams! This exam is for 70%, and it completes the Assessment for the first half of this year. We had our first assessment last Term for 30%.

Signing of MOU:
The signing of the MOU with the Marist Mission Centre and the Australian Marist Solidarity was done this week. This official signing concludes the process of our application for funds from these two Agencies. AUD 50K will be deposited into the college account soon for the renovation of the Science Lab. It will also cover the purchase of Chemicals and equipment for the Lab.
We sincerely thank the Marists in Australian for this generous contribution to the Chanel College Upgrade Project.

Mid-Year Exams:
It's very affirming to witness to the enthusiasm of the students to attend the exams.
One of our main focuses this year is to improve the learning outcomes of the students. We're very hopeful that there'll be marked improvements this year. However, lots of hard work is needed to be done!
It's equally pleasing to see some of the teachers making good use of any available time to start marking the papers.

Ongoing Renovation:
While the exams are underway, some small-scale renovation works continue. The Action Plan is to renovate all the classrooms: painting of walls and ceilings, replacing louvre frames and blades, and renewing doors.

Library:
There's a new look to the Library. The painting is complete, and the replacement of louvre frames and blades. The bookshelves have also been painted.
We anticipate the arrival of two pallets of books from New Zealand in a couple of weeks. Thanks to the Salesian Network for reaching out to Chanel College.

Outreach Program:
I started last week visiting some areas where our students come from. I visited Aleipata on Sunday with two of our teachers. It's a wonderful feeling visiting these areas and meeting the people but especially the current and former students of the college.
One of the churches that I celebrated the Mass in resembles the Church of my former school in Fiji, St.John's College, Cawaci. I stand behind the altar and look at the sea. This is very symbolic because the essence of the Eucharist is to connect Heaven and earth!

Chanel College Weekly Updates: Week 1 - Term 3

Admin Briefs:
The holidays are over, and it's back to business as usual! This is an important week because it's Revision time for our Mid-Year Exams next week!
All the schools in Samoa have had theirs! As for Chanel, this is our second exam. We need to diagnose our students to find out the areas where they need more help with their studies.

Weekly Eucharist:
We celebrated today the Opening Mass for Term 3. Fr.Mika led the celebration with a lively and powerful message to psyche up the students, mentally and spiritually.
The weekly celebration of the Mass is the anchor that keeps our feet on the ground and our spirit uplifted to God.

Revision and Remedial:
The focus for this week has been the revision and remedial classes for all Levels. We can only hope that the students will raise the standards of their preparations for the exams.

Library:
There are ongoing efforts to renovate the Library. The paintings and renewal of the louvres and screens are now complete. We're awaiting two pallets of books from New Zealand that will arrive next month.

Mini Samoan Fale:
It's heartwarming to see the students enjoying the comfort of the newly renovated two mini Samoan Fale. These are minor developments but quite significant in the process of rebuilding the college.

Special Visitor:
The Principal of St.Dominic's Girls College paid a courtesy call on Tuesday. Mrs.Anna Swann visited the college which also marked the beginning of a Bilateral working relationship between the two schools. We're working on drafting an MOA which will see some exchange programs starting next year.

Mr.Sopo Aviu:
The college is truly blessed to have the service of Mr.Sopo Aviu as our Maintenance Man! Each morning he picks up the rubbish along the driveway from the gate up to the college. Not only that but Sopo does other things such as cleaning the flower beds, water-plastering the walls, and the general beautification of the campus. History Field Trip:
We're rounding up the IA Tasks for the Year 12. On Thursday Ms.Pekina accompanied the History students for their final Field Trip before completing their second and last IA.

Printing of Exam Papers:
The task of ensuring that all the exam papers are ready for the exams is a mammoth one. Our gratitude goes to Ms.Seneueta, our Secretary and Mrs.Sobha, for doing this wonderful service.

Fr.Robert's efforts to learn Samoan!
Learning another language is not easy! Coming from Melanesia and learning a Polynesian language needs lots of efforts and patience, especially for the teacher. We're grateful to Deacon Petelo who has been helping to teach Fr.Robert to celebrate the Mass in Samoan.
He's progressing well and not so long from now Fr.Robert will be able to celebrate the Mass in Samoan. Faamalosi le a'oa'o le gagana Samoa Patele!

Chanel College Weekly Updates: 2 Weeks' Holiday!

Admin Briefs:
The school was on a two-week break! However, there were quite a few Extra-Curricular activities during this time. There were some holiday classes for the Year 12 students. There were also Sports in which some Teams from the college participated. There were also some Renovation works conducted during the break.

COC Finals:
The Under 16 Girls Rugby Team was the only Team from the college that took part in the Play-Offs for the Championship of Champions finals. The girls played really well and gave everything to their quarter-final game, but lost out in the end!
I believe these girls will go a long way in their rugby careers, as this was the first time they reached the finals. Heart congrats to Faalilo & Talava for guiding the girls. Faafetai tele!

Inaugural Marist Netball Tournament:
The college fielded two Netball Teams: U16 & U18 for this tournament. Chanel College was the only school that participated. The rest of the Teams were from Clubs.
It was a really worthwhile experience for the girls, with plenty of learning curves from the tournament! Watching the girls play against those Club Teams, they did really well and at certain times, they really pressured their opponents!
We congratulate Venus, Nafanua, and Faalilo for guiding and looking after the girls. We're indeed grateful to the few teachers who were there to cheer and support our girls.

Holiday Classes:
A few teachers conducted holiday classes for the Year 12 students. I'd like to thank Tamasoalii and Faalilo for their commitment and generosity in organising some classes for the students. There were also a few other teachers who showed up at the college to do their Exams preparations. Faafetai lava!

Ms.Pekina & Year 10/2 Students:
It's always a heartwarming experience to see teachers and students organising their own small projects to give their classrooms a face-lift! Ms.Pekina and her Y10/2 students conducted some cleaning-up of their classroom and also painting it.
I always believe this sense of pride and responsibility among the students will heighten their sense of ownership of the school. It's a wonderful leverage to make them study hard for their future.

Agriculture Science Students:
Not only that they attend classes during the holiday but the Y12 students continue with some of the agriculture projects such as the planting of vegetables. Once again, we thank Faalilo for his continuous efforts to help the students.

Library Face-Lift!
Thanks to the NZ Province who have donated NZD45k to the college! This money has enabled us to conduct a much-needed face-lift for the Library.
We begin with the painting of the Library and fixing the window screens and louvres. We're hoping to get some second-hand books in the next few weeks.
Mrs.hunt and her family are doing a wonderful job in the Library.

Computer Lab:
You may see in the photos he smiling face of Mrs.Sobha! And why not! She's now enjoying the newly installed Air Condition System in the Computer Lab.
We've also bought six new Desktop Computers to add on to the few that are functional.
Once again, we thank the NZ Marist Province for their generous contributions to Chanel College.

School Canteen:
Our Canteen Keeper, Nofo, was also inspired by the efforts to beautify some of the classrooms, she decided to clean and paint the canteen!
I'd like to thank Fr.Mika, Chris, and Patolo who helped out with the painting of the canteen. These three should work really hard and help Nofo because they eat free meals there every day!

Mini-Samoan Fale:
The two mini-Samoan Fales in front of the classrooms were also renovated during this holiday. These provide the shelter for the students to use during breaks and rainy days.
It may appear small but these are some of the strategies to improve the learning environment around the school.

New Residence:
The new residence for the Marist Fathers is near completion now! The contractors rounded up their work this week. Only the Electricians are trying to fix the electricity. Once that is done then we await the Blessing of the new house.
As you can see from the photos, I think the house and the rooms are more exquisite and better than the Taumeasina Resort!!
Frankly, it's a bit too flashy for us Marists! Anyway, we'll certainly enjoy living in it!
We would like to thank Fr.Ricky Bernard, a former Marist, with his contractors, for a job excellently done! Faafetai tele!

Holiday Activities:
I often told my teachers and students. If you go on holiday and coming back, still look and feel the same, it means that they never took a break!
We decided to play a few games of golf! It's a bit expensive for us Marists and Chanel teachers, but we thoroughly enjoyed it, especially to beginners such as Frs.Mika & Robert! I should be paid for the free golf training sessions!!
As the saying goes, the family who prays and plays together, stay together!

Conclusion:
We're all looking forward to resuming classes next Monday! Thank you very much to All Chanel Family & Friends for your ongoing support for our beloved school.

Faatalofa atu to all Chanel Family and friends! This is just to inform you that since we're on holiday, we'll put together the Updates for next week. Even though we're on holiday but some extra-curricular activities are undergoing where our students are taking part in. The finals of the Rugby Championships and the Inaugural Netball Tournament of the Marist Club.
Meanwhile, we continue to engage in some healthy exercises like playing golf! More importantly, to eat healthy food like Sashimi!

Chanel College Weekly Updates: Week 11 - Term 2

Admin Briefs:
The focus this week is on the coverage of the syllabus. The teachers and students are well aware that this is the last week of teaching. When we return in Term 3, the first week is Revision before we embark on our Mid-Year Exams in week two.
The Rugby and Netball Teams continue their preparations for their games in the first week of the holiday.
The students and teachers are looking forward to a well-deserved break after eleven weeks of toiling in the vineyard of the Lord!

Weekly celebration of the Eucharist:
The college was yet again blessed today to have another ex-scholar Priest presiding over the Mass. Fr. Tavita Lemusu MSC, who has just returned from Kiribati accepted our invitation to lead the Mass.
Hence, for four weeks now in a row, we've had the service of our ex-scholar Priests, which is very inspiring to the staff and students.

Extra-Curricular Activities:
Netball:
The college is fielding two Teams, U16 and U18, to participate in the Marist Netball Club tournament during the holiday. The girls are trained well by Mrs.Warren and Mrs.Sobha.

Rugby Union:
The U16 Girls are training well under the guidance of Mr.Wilbur and Mrs.Tavui. This is the only surviving Team from all the Teams that took part in rugby competitions this year.
There's a chance that our Girls might win the championships as the games will be held at the college. You're most welcome to come and support the girls on Monday.

Tag Rugby:
We also have a Tag Rugby tournament that was supposed to be held this week. However, it has been deferred for next Term. The Team has been trained by Mrs.Rosemarie and Mr.Gray.

Working Bees:
The college conducted a Working Bees session yesterday. Since the Rugby finals for the U16 Girls will be held at the college, we need to prepare the grounds and beautify the campus.
I always believe in the concept of working together, teachers and students. The saying is true, 'The family that prays together stay together!' Hence, the school that sweats together will remain stronger! I've informed the teachers that they arm themselves with knives and rakes and work together with the students. No supervision business!

New Residence:
The new residence looks beautiful like a Five Star Hotel! We just can't wait to move into our new abode!

Professional Development:
Last Saturday, our teachers joined Paul VI College for a combine PD session. This was facilitated by Mrs.Buatava, a senior lecturer at the University of the South Pacific.
This is part and parcel of the strategies to upskill the teachers and harness the quality of teaching and learning in the classrooms. The focus on how to prepare an effective Scheme of Work, Workbook, and Lesson Plans.

Chanel College Weekly Updates: Week 10 - Term 2

Salutation:

Admin Briefs:
This is the penultimate week before we break for the two-week holiday! The focus for this week is our Coverage of the Syllabus. We're putting extra efforts to cover certain Topics and Units that will come in the Mid-Year Exams.
In the meantime, there are a few extra-curricular activities that our students are engaged in, and preparations for them. Next Friday will be the Tag Rugby Tournament for all the Catholic Secondary Schools in Apia. During the first week of holiday, our Under 16 Girls will take part in the finals for Rugby Union. Lastly, our Netball girls, U16 & U18 will participate in the Marist Club Netball Tournament.

Weekly Assembly:
The Year 11 students led the assembly this week. Each week's assembly is led by a class. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to lead the college in the assembly. For the students, this is a chance to stand at the front and conduct prayers and hymns.

Weekly Eucharist:
The college was truly blessed yet again this week. Another former ex-scholar of the college, Fr.Peter Brad Chadwick, presided over the celebrations of the Mass today. Fr.Peter is based in Dunedin, and he's currently on a break, and he's here visiting his family.

Agriculture Science:
The Senior Levels continue to engage in planting vegetables as part of the IA Tasks. It's great to see the teachers and students working together in these projects.

Extra-Curricular Activities:
Mrs.Rosemarie & Mr.Gray have been busy preparing the students for the upcoming Tag-Rugby Tournament, which will be held here next Friday.
The event is organised by the Health and Physical Education Department (HPE).

Rugby Unions Finals:
The Politics in Samoa has somewhat spoiled the preparations of the students for the finals. Last month, the Ministry of Education cancelled the events, following a Directive from the government. Last two weeks, they announced that the finals would go ahead! I hope that the government will always consider the schools as a top priority and not for political maneuvers!

Marist Club Netball Tournament:
The college will field two Teams for the upcoming tournament. The U16 & U18 Girls have started their preparations for the event which will take place during the first week of the break.

Visitors:
An ex-student of the college, Mr.Richard Parker, an alumnus of 1983, visited the college. Mr.Parker lives in Melbourne. We're always happy to welcome back our ex-scholars who wish to visit us.

Cash Donation from the Government:
A surprise visit from a government official visited the college this week. He brought $300 as a token of appreciation from the government for our taking part in the March Parade for the Independence of Samoa. I thanked him on our behalf but I told him that we need more cash donations if we're to participate next year!

Five-Star Hote:
Our new residence is shaping up to be a Five-Star Hotel! We just can't wait to move into our new lodgings!
