Activities in Vietnam have focused on priority species including critically endangered and endemic species of greatest conservation concern. Project focus on the endemic Vietnamese Pond Turtle (Mauremys annamensis) and Indochinese Box Turtles (Cuora bourreti) and (Cuora picturata) in central Vietnam.

Good news: On the 7th of May 2014, Quang Ngai police confiscated 21 kilograms of precious, rare wild animals in a coach. The shipment included 2 Elongated tortoises (Indotestudo elongata), 2 Orange-headed temple turtles (Heosemys grandis), 4 Striped-necked leaf turtles (Cyclemys pulchristriata) 7 snakes identified as King Cobras (Ophiophagus hannah), Chinese cobras (Naja atra), and Rat snakes (Ptyas Mucosa). The snakes were then released back to the wild in the Nui Ngang Lake's area, Ba To district. The Quang Ngai province's Forest Protection Sub Department and the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) are working together to transfer the turtles to the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC), Cuc Phuong National Park. The man transporting the turtles will be fined 40 million VND ($1,902.95).

It was a happy weekend for a lucky green sea turtle which was released to the sea in Thua Thien Hue province, central Vietnam by the provincial fishery department and local people. The 32kg turtle was observed in a restaurant in Lang Co town, Phu Loc district by a foreign tourist who had reported this case to the ATP the week before. Thanks to Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV) and the local fishery department's effort, the restaurant owner agreed to release the animal voluntarily on 24th May 2014 after keeping it as a pet for several years.

Ex-softshell hunter becomes a conservationist

In the 1980 and 1990’s Mr Nguyen Van Nhan living in Thanh Hoa province of Vietnam was well known in his local community as a hunter of giant softshells. These were Swinhoe’s Softshell Turtle (Rafetus swinhoei), better known in Vietnam as the Hoan Kiem Turtle. They are now considered the worlds rarest turtle with only four animals known in existence. Using a techniques of harpoons and long baited hook lines to ensnare the giant animals he claims to have caught over 20 individuals in his lifetime.

At the time Mr Nhan did not know the species was rare and it was caught and sold locally with the same price as fish. It has been the case at many locations for this giant species in Vietnam that they have been hunted to local extinction before people became aware that they were rare or important. Now Mr Nhan is working with conservationist from the Asian Turtle Program (ATP) to monitor the lakes he once used to fish and is hopefully that more animals of the species can be found and protected.
