When I was accepted into the Change Makers program in Vietnam, I knew I was in for a life-changing experience that I would carry with me forever. Still, it’s hard to truly understand the depth of such an experience until you’ve had time to look back and reflect.

The trip offered me the opportunity to fully immerse myself in a culture vastly different from my own. It pushed me outside my comfort zone, encouraged me to try new things, and introduced me to some truly incredible people. I could not have anticipated the sheer number of new experiences packed into just two weeks.

After spending the first night in bustling Ho Chi Minh City, we took a bus down to Trà Vinh University, where we met the students we would be working with. In small teams, we worked together on project ideas focused on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. As we sat side by side brainstorming in class, it became clear that despite living on opposite sides of the world, we all shared the same hopes and ambitions for a better, more sustainable future.

Whenever anyone asks me what the best part of my trip was, I tell them it was the people I met. The TVU students were the most welcoming, friendly, and compassionate individuals. It meant so much to see how proud and excited they were to introduce us to their culture and history. From introducing us to their favorite foods to taking us to karaoke, they went out of their way to make us feel at home.

This experience has inspired me to continue learning, growing, and working together with others to create meaningful change. Actual change happens when we listen and learn from one another. I encourage everyone to embrace opportunities for connection and collaboration across cultures to help build a better future together.

"As a female carpentry student, I've often felt like I was carving my path in a male-dominated industry. But nothing could have prepared me for the experience of travelling to Vietnam through NSCC's Change Makers program, where I quickly discovered that the concept of a female carpenter was not just unusual, but in many cases, completely
unheard of.

Throughout the trip, I had conversations with TVU students who were curious about my trade, many of whom had never even heard the word 'carpenter'. In Vietnam, construction work appears to be predominantly done by men, and witnessing it firsthand was both eye-opening and humbling. Workers laboured tirelessly in nearly 40-degree heat with high humidity, many wearing flip-flops or bare feet, and no PPE in sight. At first, my instinct was to judge that through a Canadian lens, worrying about safety standards and what was "missing." But that mindset quickly shifted. I had to acknowledge that my concern came from a place of privilege. What we saw was not carelessness, but a reflection of a different system, one shaped by economic realities, cultural norms, and an incredible work ethic."

"My trip to Vietnam was the trip of a lifetime. From the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the peaceful countryside in Tra Vinh, every day was full of new sights, delicious food, personal connections, and unforgettable moments.

As part of the Change Maker Project, I worked on a project focused on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It was great to team up with students from both Canada and Vietnam, where we shared ideas, learned from each other, and had a lot of fun along the way. Throughout my time, I learned a lot about the similarities between Canada, Vietnam, and other countries that were relevant to what we were learning about.

Some of the highlights include elaborate dinner meals, a cycling trip, loud and hilarious karaoke, and connecting with amazing people. I learned so much - not just about sustainability, but about culture, community, and myself.

I came home with new skills, fresh perspectives, and a bunch of new friends. I’m so grateful for the experience and already dreaming about going back one day!"

When I found out I had been chosen to join the student exchange program with friends from NSCC – Canada, my first feelings were joy and honor. This was an opportunity not everyone gets, and I knew I was lucky. My initial goals were simple: to improve my English, gain more knowledge, and make new friends. But alongside that excitement, I also carried many worries. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to communicate well with the Canadian students – my English was still very limited, my vocabulary was small, and my reaction time wasn’t fast. I wondered: Would the language and cultural differences make it hard for me to fit in? But my desire to meet new people, to learn, and to grow helped me overcome that fear. I told myself: “Just be sincere. If you can’t speak well, listen, smile, and be kind.”

On the first day – June 9th – when I met the Canadian students, I was truly nervous. I greeted them first, and they happily replied. That small exchange made me feel welcomed. The first person I connected with was Jen – she was so kind. We talked, took photos, and started getting to know each other. That moment – breaking through the language barrier, even just for a few sentences – made me incredibly happy.

Day by day, I slowly let go of my hesitation. I learned how to open up, how to be proactive, how to accept myself – even if I wasn’t perfect. There were times when I couldn’t understand everything, or when I didn’t know how to express myself in English. But I didn’t give up. I asked questions, I learned from my teammates, and I allowed myself to make mistakes. And gradually, I felt myself growing – little by little. I still remember the look in little student’s eyes during our workshop on Energy at Victory Center – so shy, yet so curious. I felt a bit helpless when I couldn’t help her feel confident enough to speak up. But I believe that even small acts of encouragement can make a big difference in someone’s future.

I’ll never forget the days in Gia Lai – from our sustainability presentation at Gia Lai College to my very first time climbing a volcano, Chu Dang Ya. At one point, I didn’t think I could make it – the path was steep and exhausting – but thanks to everyone’s encouragement and my own determination, I reached the top. Standing there, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, I realized that overcoming a physical challenge was also a way of expanding the limits within my heart.

I also cherish the time we spent cooking together, trying local Gia Lai dishes, and walking under the tall pine trees by the peaceful lake. And I’ll always remember the moment at the airport – when we exchanged paper hearts with heartfelt messages written on them. We didn’t say much, but in every look and hug, I could feel the affection and connection we had built. There are three moments that touched me the most:

• The surprise graduation for Kip and Colleen – where I witnessed tears of joy.
• The 10-year celebration between TVU and NSCC – where I truly felt the value of long-term collaboration.
• And the goodbye at the airport – when we handed each other paper hearts with warm messages.

There weren’t many words, just teary eyes and long, silent hugs. June 20th – the final day – was filled with emotion. My roommate Nhi and I gave 𝑲𝒉𝒂̆𝒏 𝑹𝒂̆̀𝒏 (a traditional Vietnamese scarf) to our Canadian friends. It wasn’t just a gift, but a piece of our hearts – a farewell from Tra Vinh, a wish for peace, and a gentle goodbye. I could see the emotion in their eyes, and at that moment, I realized: it’s always the sincerest things that touch us the deepest.

When it was time to say goodbye, I hugged every single person – without holding back. Because I knew this wasn’t the end. It was just a pause in our story – a moment for us to carry each other in our hearts, with gratitude and love. Maybe one day I’ll forget the exact words I said in English, but I’ll never forget the looks, the laughter, and the feeling of walking this journey together.

If someone asked me: “What’s the greatest thing you gained from this program?” I would say: It opened my heart. More than just improving my English or gaining new knowledge – I learned how to love, how to listen, and how to appreciate the people around me, no matter where they come from. And I believe: Goodbye is not the end – it’s a promise of reunion. One day, somewhere in the world, we’ll meet again – with the same smiles we shared today.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the teachers, organizers, and friends who made this journey possible. Thank you for believing in me, supporting me, and for sharing each unforgettable moment with me. I truly hope this program will continue to grow, so that more young people will have the chance to open their hearts, push beyond their limits, and create lifelong memories – just like I did.

On the final day of the Women in STEM – TVU x NSCC Exchange Program, students came together not in a lab or lecture hall—but in the kitchen.

👩‍🍳 In a truly heartwarming experience, the group learned how to make 𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐬 (𝐜𝐡𝐚̉ 𝐠𝐢𝐨̀) from scratch—rolling, frying, and laughing side by side. More than just a cooking lesson, it was a moment of connection, celebration, and cultural appreciation.

💬 As the program came to a close, there were hugs, promises, and heartfelt goodbyes. Though the time together was short, the friendships, lessons, and inspiration will last much longer.

✨ This is more than an exchange—it’s the beginning of a lifelong journey of global citizenship, collaboration, and empowerment in STEM

The next chapter of the Women in STEM – TVU x NSCC Exchange Program brought students to Gia Lai Province, where learning continued through culture, nature, and shared visions for a sustainable future.

💡 The day began with a project idea-sharing session, where students from Canada and Vietnam presented their concepts for promoting sustainability through innovation, education, and community action. It was a powerful moment of collaboration, creativity, and global thinking.

🧶 Following this, the group visited Phung Village a rich cultural landmarks of the Bahnar and Jrai ethnic groups. Students explored traditional brocade weaving, observed wooden sculptures, and learned about local customs surrounding water use and conservation.

🥾 In the afternoon, students hiked to the top of Chu Dang Ya Volcano, embracing both physical challenge and natural beauty — a reminder of the deep bond between environment and resilience.

✨ Through these meaningful experiences, students came to see that sustainability lives not only in science, but in culture, tradition, and community values passed down through generations.

As the Women in STEM – TVU x NSCC Exchange Program continued, students had the opportunity to visit the STARS WATER Center at Tra Vinh University — a hub for research, innovation, and action in water sustainability.

💬 One of the highlights was a powerful presentation by Professor Harry Futselaar - Saxion University of applied science, who shared deep insights into the global water crisis and the critical need for effective water management to secure a sustainable future.

🌱 The talk sparked meaningful reflections among students about how our everyday consumption choices impact water resources — and how small, conscious changes can lead to big, positive transformations.

🔬 The visit also included hands-on demonstrations with modern water filtration systems and live experiments, giving students a closer look at real-world water technology in action.

Canadian and Vietnamese students teamed up to bring STEM learning to local elementary and middle school students in Victory languages Center.
💡 Through fun, interactive activities, they introduced the origins of energy, how renewable energy works, and demonstrated simple ways to generate electricity using natural sources like wind, water, and saltwater reactions.

🌍 More than just science, the goal was to help younger students understand where everyday energy comes from—and why it’s important to save energy for a more sustainable future.

👧🏻🧒🏽 From curiosity to awareness, the exchange students are inspiring the next generation to think differently about energy and the environment.

After the inspiring opening day, our students from Tra Vinh University (TVU) and Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC, Canada) continued their shared journey through a series of hands-on and heart-led learning experiences.

🔬 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐕𝐔 - where student-led STEM projects reflect creativity, innovation, and a strong community-driven mindset.

🌴𝐒𝐨𝐤𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦 – 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐭 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦, a shining model of local innovation and sustainability. Here, they learned from women leaders in STEAM about building resilient and sustainable business models, the intersection of education, environment, and empowerment, and how local roots can lead to global change.

💡𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 work to brainstorm and propose sustainable solutions for a better future. These shared moments not only sparked new ideas but also deepened cross-cultural understanding and built a foundation for lasting friendships.

🤩Today marks the inspiring beginning of the Women in STEM Exchange Program between Tra Vinh University (Vietnam) and Nova Scotia Community College (Canada) – where young minds from across the globe unite with passion, purpose, and the power of science.

💬 The morning was filled with smiles, stories, and sparks of connection as students from both institutions joined in ice-breaking activities, including a creative session of beading inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – using colors and symbols to represent global missions that matter.

🏫 In the afternoon, participants explored the vibrant learning environment of TVU through a guided campus tour, setting the stage for collaboration, cultural exchange, and lifelong friendships.
