Ancestor worship - a fine tradition of Viet Nam
Ancestor worship is a ritual practice showing respect to deceased family members that reminds people their roots. Most Vietnamese families have an ancestral altar at a prominent place of the house. The ancestral altar is set with ancestral tablets and pictures, together with an incense container. Two candles are placed on sides of the altar to represent the Sun on the left and the Moon on the right.
During the Lunar New Year festival, the Vietnamese at home and abroad carefully cook traditional dishes to put on the home altar to worship their ancestors. Children are obliged to respect their parents in life and remember them after they die.
On special occasions like ancestors’ death anniversaries or the Lunar New Year. Special rites consist of making offerings of fruits, foods and wine, lighting the candles and burning incense before praying in front of the altar. Tet is an occasion for people to invite the souls of their ancestors to join the family’s Tet celebration.
The altar may also be decorated with a branch of peach blossoms in warm pink to drive away evil spirits and bad luck. The ancestral altar is a symbol of the country’s culture that shows its respect for all the past, present day, and the future.

Where playing video games IS real life
Seo-yun Cho doesn’t have time for hobbies because she spends all her time playing video games. ‘I practise as much as I can so I will improve,’ she says. ‘This is what I really need to do.’
Seo-yun and her friends are members of KS Fireflies 6, a video game team. She and the other members share a flat in Seoul’s business district. Since they all left school, they have managed to make playing video games their job.

Seo-yun and the rest of the team need to train hard and keep fit, as top players need to do about 30 mouse-clicks a minute. Video games are big business in South Korea, and the best players (like KS Fireflies 6) usually become even better-known than top baseball or volleyball players.

Starting photography
By Mrs Howells, Class 3D teacher
Have you ever wanted to take better pictures of your family, or of your cat? Well, I can help you. In fact, that’s what makes photography such a fantastic hobby. It doesn’t matter if you have a new camera or just use your phone. We photographers are always trying to improve. We want today’s photos to be more interesting than yesterday’s.

Actually, I’ve never read a book about photography, and I get bored watching videos on the net. I thought about what was wrong with them and decided how to do better next time. And in Week 2, I’ll ask you to do the same with photos you have taken.
Do you want to know what I think? I don’t think there’s anyone who can’t take amazing photos. Everyone wants to, and that’s cool. But if you do, come along to Room 4D on Wednesdays after lunch from 1:30 to 2:00.

Jack Calder
Violin player Jack Calder plays in the Australian band, Ocean Blue.
Jack Calder started playing the violin when he was ten. 'My music teacher played and one day he asked if anyone wanted to learn. Some girls put up their hands and so did I. I didn't have a violin, but my uncle said I could use his. The lessons were really hard at first, but playing the violin soon became important to me.'
After leaving school, Jack moved to Melbourne. For a time, he preferred listening to music to playing it. The rock music he listened to sounded very different from violin music, so he bought an electric violin, and started putting the things he liked about rock music into the music he played on his violin.
A year later, Jack met a small group of Melbourne musicians. 'We all thought about music in the same way and started Ocean Blue together. A year later, we were playing lots of concerts, and our music was selling well. But we didn't want this to make us different people. We didn't want to stop being friends.'
Jack meets many people who think playing the violin is an unusual career, but he doesn't agree with them. 'I think it's the best thing in the world. I guess I'm lucky that way. The Internet has changed music, but when I walk into a violin shop it's like entering another world – one where time has stopped. Someone has looked after these beautiful old instruments that are two or three hundred years old. I think that's amazing.'

US-Israel Strikes Target Iran’s Kharg Island as Trump Issues Dramatic Warning Ahead of Deadline
On April 7, 2026, the United States and Israel carried out intense airstrikes on more than 50 military sites on Iran’s Kharg Island, a critical oil export hub that handles about 90% of the country’s crude oil exports. According to U.S. officials and Iranian media reports, the attacks focused on ammunition depots, radar systems, and other military facilities. Oil infrastructure on the island was deliberately spared.
President Donald Trump dramatically raised the stakes by posting on Truth Social: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.” The statement came just hours before his self-imposed 8 p.m. ET deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reach a comprehensive deal. Trump also suggested that a “complete and total regime change” could lead to a better future for Iran.
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that any further attacks on civilian facilities would trigger retaliation “outside the region,” including cutting off oil and gas supplies to the U.S. and its allies for years. Iranian officials called on young people to form human chains around power plants to protect national infrastructure, and President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed that over 14 million Iranians had volunteered to defend the country.
The escalation has sent global oil prices surging, with Brent crude climbing above $110 per barrel and U.S. crude nearing $116. Stock markets fell as investors worried about further disruption to energy supplies. Diplomatic efforts continue through intermediaries, but both sides remain far apart.
