CÁCH DÙNG WHEREAS trong tiếng Anh và áp dụng trong bài thi viết IELTS TASK 1

Từ "whereas" được dùng để so sánh hoặc đối lập hai ý, thường nằm giữa hai mệnh đề, mang nghĩa là "trong khi đó", "trái lại", hoặc "ngược lại".

🧠 Cấu trúc ngữ pháp:
✅ Whereas + S + V, S + V
Dùng khi muốn đối lập hai ý trong cùng một câu.

🔹 Ví dụ:

Ballet is more popular among young children, whereas modern dance attracts older teenagers.
(Ballet phổ biến hơn với trẻ nhỏ, trong khi đó múa hiện đại thu hút thanh thiếu niên lớn tuổi hơn.)

📌 Một số lưu ý khi dùng "whereas":
Không dùng dấu phẩy trước “whereas” khi ở giữa câu nếu hai mệnh đề ngắn.

Ví dụ: Men prefer football whereas women like volleyball.

Dùng dấu phẩy trước “whereas” nếu mệnh đề dài hoặc cần nhấn mạnh sự đối lập.

Ví dụ: Private studios accounted for 48% of attendance, whereas college-based studios only made up 10%.

Không nên dùng "whereas" để thay thế cho "while" nếu không có ý so sánh hoặc đối lập.

❌ I was walking home whereas it started raining. (sai ngữ nghĩa)

✅ Some students prefer studying in the morning, whereas others feel more productive at night.

🆚 So sánh "whereas" và "while":

Whereas Trái lại, trong khi đó (so sánh/đối lập) Ballet is popular among kids, whereas modern dance suits teens.
While Trong khi (đối lập hoặc mô tả hành động đồng thời) While I was cooking, he was setting the table.
Modern dance is popular while ballet is less so.

✅ Trong IELTS Writing Task 1:
"Whereas" là từ nối hữu ích để mô tả sự khác biệt trong biểu đồ.

📘 Ví dụ:

The number of participants in ballet classes declined with age, whereas modern dance classes saw an increase in older groups.

48% of students attended private studios, whereas only 10% chose college-based venues.
