Bộ phim "Honey" mô tả việc sản xuất mật ong rừng hoang dã cũng như các khía cạnh khác nhau của tiêu thụ mật ong ở vùng cao nguyên miền trung Angola. Mật ong là một phương tiện quan trọng của sinh hoạt và thu nhập trong khu vực này và do đó ăn sâu trong văn hóa địa phương. Bộ phim đã được hình thành và được quay bởi một nhóm dân làng từ khu vực Cusseque- Một bộ phim được làm theo cách tham dự.

Martin Gruber studied Visual Anthropology at Goldsmiths College, London and Social Anthropology at Hamburg University. He works as an ethnographic researcher, filmmaker and lecturer. Martin recently completed a PhD on participatory ethnographic filmmaking at the Department of Anthropology and Cultural Studies, University of Bremen.

The film “Honey” depicts the production of honey from wild bees as well as different aspects of honey consumption in the highlands of central Angola. Honey is an important means of subsistence and cash income in this area and thus deeply embedded in the local culture. The film was conceived and shot by a group of villagers from the Cusseque area during a participatory film workshop organised for the international research project “The Future Okavango”, investigating resource management in the Okavango Basin.

A Proposal for a Retrospective Screening and Discussion - A Country Auction Film Project

This session will consist of the screening of two related films followed by a discussion.

In 1983 three ethnographers and a documentary filmmaker collaboratively produced a film — A Country Auction: The Paul V. Leitzel Estate Sale that documented ethnographic research conducted on estate sales in a rural Pennsylvania community. It examined the personal, social and economic processes involved when a family dissolves their homestead. The film portrayed the auction process as integral to the social life of the community and as a method for a family and community to deal with the death of one of their members. (58 minutes)

Over the next 25 years, this film was screened in numerous film festivals, broadcast on U.S. public television, and reviewed in academic journals. The consensus among the filmmakers was that few people comprehended their intentions. In 2008 they decided to return to the community where A Country Auction was filmed and hold a 25th anniversary screening and hold a discussion with people who had been at the sale. At the same time, the four co-producers met to engage in a prolonged critical discussion of the original film. The result is a unique reflexive exploration of the successes and failures of an ethnographic film. Milton R.A. Machuca-Galvez received his Ph.D. in Anthropology (concentration in cultural and visual anthropology) from Temple University, Philadelphia in 2004. His fieldwork was undertaken in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, “the mushroom capital of the world” with Mexican migrant workers. In his dissertation “Católico Aquí y Allá (Catholic here and there): Mexican migration and the Roman Catholic Church in Southern Chester County, Pennsylvania,” he analyzes the relationship between the Mexican community and the Roman Catholic Church in Southern Chester County. He has taught at Temple University, Moore College of Art and Design and Pitzer College. He is currently a Visiting professor and Latin American studies coordinator at Swarthmore College.

Jay Ruby, an emeritus professor of Anthropology at Temple University in Philadelphia, has been exploring the relationship between cultures and pictures for the past 40 years and is considered a leader in the field of visual anthropology and multimedia ethnography. His research interests revolve around the application of anthropological insights to the production and comprehension of photographs, film and television. He holds degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles. A founding member of the Society for the Anthropology of Visual Communication, past president of International Film Seminars, Ruby holds advisory and board memberships in a number of national and international organizations. Since 1960, he has edited a variety of journals on American archaeology, popular culture, and visual anthropology. For the past three decades, he has conducted ethnographic studies of pictorial communication in Juniata County, PA., Oak Park, Illinois and Bohemian Malibu.
