🔆Summer can be a tough time for children who are diagnosed with Autism. Families can dread the long days of no school and limited choices of how and where to occupy their children. Changes to routines and too much free time can cause children to display challenging behaviours. While every child with autism is different, activities can be modified to help them enjoy any activity. Here are some of my five ideas for enjoying the summer🔆
1. Messy play is a great way for children to explore their inner curiosities, imagination and experimentation. Use different tools, paints, dried foods, shaving cream, anything which will get the senses working! Be aware that many children on the spectrum have sensory issues which make sticky, gooey substances difficult to manage; others may put non-food items in their mouths. So start with simple, non-toxic supplies like crayons, paper, and safety scissors and progress from there. And don't worry if your child isn't an artist.🐾
2. Most children with Autism love been in or around water and so do their siblings and parents! On a hot day seize the opportunity to cool down and take the family to a local pool, beach or safe lake for your family to have fun.🏊🏼♂️
3. Physical activity is extremely important for everyone and summer is a great time to get all of the family involved. Depending how sensitive and mobile your child is you can take your child to public parks, trampoline centres, rock climbing, even back garden fun and learning to ride a bike!. Physical activity is also great for social skills and creating lasting memories with our loved ones.🚴🏼♂️🏀
4. Take your child out to ride buses, boats and trains. Public transport is a great way to explore our local environment and see the beautiful scenery. Its great practice for children to become accustomed to different scenarios and environments.🚂⛴
5. Zoo’s and Museums provide great open and enjoyable spaces for children to become familiar with. It is also a great opportunity for children to get up close and personal with animals and to learn about how to care for each other and other animals.🐏🐘
