[IELTS VOCABULARY]

Recently, I have been pondering over the topic of poverty. In this post, I want to share with you two synonymous words which can be used to talk about the gap between the poor and the rich.

The first word is “gulf”. This word means “an important difference between the ideas, opinions, or situations of two groups of people”.

E.g. There is a widening gulf between the rich and the poor in our society.
It is not only up to the government to bridge the gulf between the working class and the middle class. It also consists in each individual’s effort.

The second word which has an exactly same meaning as the first one is “chasm”. This word means “a very large difference between two opinions or groups of people”.

E.g. There is still a vast economic chasm between developed and developing countries.
The chasm between the impoverished masses and the wealthy few are exacerbating the current economic situation of the country.

That’s it for today! Peace ✌️

[IELTS VOCABULARY]

Alongside the recent much-expected astronomy event in the US, here are some words which are related to Space but also have other meanings to them.

When it comes to space, we definitely all know the word “orbit”. Its usual meaning is the curved path in which a planet or an object follows as it moves around another planet, star or moon. “Orbit” can either be noun or verb.

E.g. The new spaceship has been in orbit for almost half a year.
Satellites have been put into orbit to record the recent changes in the ozone layer of the Earth.

Interestingly, “orbit” can also be used to refer to “an area that a particular person or organization, etc. deals with or is able to influence”. We often use it in the phrase “within someone’s orbit”. The collocations could be “to fall/come/be within someone’s orbit”.

E.g. This matter is not within my orbit so I can’t really do anything with it.
Fashion falls within her orbit so Maria may be able to connect us with potential sponsors.

The second word is the adverb “astronomically”. Normally, it is understood as “in a way that is connected to astronomy”. However, it could also be an adverb synonymous to “extremely” or “by a very large amount”.

E.g. House prices are astronomically high these days.
Crime rates in underdeveloped areas are astronomically higher than the others.
The recent solar eclipse is astronomically influential among people in the US since they will not see another one until 2044.
The area was astronomically damaged by tbe recent earthquake.

I hope this helps!

[IELTS VOCABULARY]

Apart from their regular meanings, “smart” and “fashionable” are also used for describing a restaurant that is popular and currently attracting a lot of people.

E.g. The Duke is a fashionable restaurant where people can get a good meal at a reasonable price.

Khaosan Road is a smart restaurant that serves a wide variety of Thai specialties.

Next time, you can practice using these words in speaking topics about food!
