It only takes 10 seconds to see how conserving forests protects us from flooding and keeps food on the table! The world loses $400 billion each year to soil erosion, but this experiment shows how easy it is to prevent! Soil is the ultimate source of almost all the food on our table, but it gets depleted at an alarming rate. Climate change has meant heavier and more frequent storms and floods that wash away the nutrient-rich topsoil layer. Trees keep the soil in place and provide additional nutrients. It's time we start protecting our trees and forests, because our lives depend on it!

Would you want to become soil when you die? People are now being legally composted in Washington, with two licensed facilities officially offering human composting services! After passing, the body is buried in a reusable vessel where it's covered with wood chips, straw, and alfalfa. It's aerated and heated to 150°F to speed up the breakdown process. Natural occurring microbes turn the body into nutrient-rich soil that can be used for growing trees and plants! Each body stays in the vessel for a month, and everything including bones and teeth, are transformed. The process requires just 1/8 of the energy needed for cremation and saves a ton of CO2 per person in comparison! Composting also saves space compared to a traditional funeral service that buries the body. Washington was the first state to legalize human composting last year as an alternative to cremation and burial, but now two facilities are officially up and running. Is human composting the most sustainable way to go?

Nearly 6 million tons of medical waste is produced by US hospitals every year! A group of crafty nurses began repurposing sheets of sterile wrap used to cover surgical instruments into sleeping bags for the unhoused population in Tampa, Florida. With 33 pounds of waste produced by each hospital patient every day, much of it sterile and used only once before being thrown out, it's about time someone came up with a better use for it!

A landfill built in the middle of an elephant corridor means they have to risk their lives just to eat! 😡 Sri Lankan elephants looking for food have to live on a diet composed of plastic trash and food scraps. The country’s three largest dumps border important wildlife protection zones. Even worse, elephants are crossing electric fences to get into landfills, resulting in conflict with farmers and villagers nearby. There have been hundreds of elephant deaths and human casualties, yet the landfills that attract them remain open. It's time to rethink waste management and stop turning our planet into a garbage bin!
