It's Registration Week! This is an invitation to consider taking "Hands-On History," where you'll try your hand at entry-level historical research.

We'll handle magazines and periodicals from the 1960s and 70s; we'll practice interviewing people about the living past; and we'll take a trip to the National Archives Center II to look at unpublished documents from the twentieth century. Toward the end of the course, you will design a long-term research project that you may choose to carry out over Summer 2026 (for independent study credit) if you want to.

Hands-On History is a required course for the History major and minor. Beyond that, the skills we develop in Hands-On History are useful for any line of work or study in which you work with documents or conduct interviews, especially about the past. We will also cover research ethics and different approaches to storytelling—skills and knowledge that are essential to a wide range of pursuits.

In Spring '25, the Fulbright History program is hosting a speaker series on "History for the Future," and I want YOU to join us!

There are two ways to be part of History for the Future. Anyone at Fulbright can come to any of the talks and some of the workshops. I will post a schedule soon. Talks will be on Thursday evenings and will be in-person or hybrid.

Students can also take it for credit as History 216. Students taking it for credit must commit to coming from 6:30-9:30pm each Thursday and will participate in activities connected to the talks. Students in the course will also play an active role in helping to organize the speaker series and will get to talk a little more closely with some of the speakers.

The course quickly filled up during the initial registration period, but for now, there appear to be about 3 open seats--feel free to come tonight and check it out if you're curious!

Today in Exploring the Past: Five Foods that Made the Modern World (HIS150), we talked about the Cod Wars and the origins of the 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone, and I attempted one of the recipes that Mark Kurlansky includes in his classic book, Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World. Students were very polite about my cooking. My recommendation: more salt, less milk, more mustard! --Mark Frank
