Kowalski et al. (2021) conducted a scoping review to examine muscle activation during different push-up variations and how this information can be used for exercise selection in shoulder rehabilitation. The review included 30 studies with a total of 606 participants. Six push-up variations were included: standard push-up, push-up plus, suspension push-up, unstable push-up, incline push-up, and incline push-up with the hands on an exercise ball. The muscles most consistently studied were the serratus anterior (SA), upper trapezius (UT), middle/lower trapezius, pectoralis major, and triceps brachii.

In a clear traumatic or contact injury, the relationship between the event and the injury may be relatively direct. However, many musculoskeletal pain presentations develop through a combination of factors rather than a single movement or isolated incident. Repeated loading, physical capacity, previous injury, physical activity, recovery, and individual factors may all contribute to the development and persistence of symptoms.

The eccentric deceleration phase (often referred to simply as eccentric) is the phase of the muscle action spectrum responsible for the most muscle damage, inflammation, impaired muscle function, and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). [1, 2]
Because active lengthening of the muscle under load produces significant mechanical stress and micro-trauma to the muscle fibers, the volume should be carefully managed.

Motor Behavior
Functional movement is learned, applied, and retained using the concept of motor behavior. The study of motor behavior examines how the nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems interact to produce skilled movement using sensory information from internal and external environments. Collectively, motor behavior represents the combination of motor control, motor learning, and motor development.

The compensations in movement that the body makes in response to static and dynamic malalignments are known as relative flexibility. Relative flexibility represents the body’s ability to find the path of least resistance to accomplish a task, even if that path requires altered muscle recruitment and creates dynamic malalignments.

Intervertebral Increases in disc pressure and stress are influenced by the kinematics of the lumbar spine. Disc pressure increases with lumbar flexion and decreases in lordosis during the performance of activities. In addition, a combination of motions about the lumbar spine have been demonstrated to increase the strain placed on the discs and include flexion with lateral bending (Neumann et al., 2016).

Mental stress that leads to anxiety can create breathing pattern dysfunction (BPD). BPD can overactivate the scalenes and other accessory breathing muscles, leading to further postural distortion and kinetic chain dysfunction (Chapman et al., 2016; Page et al., 2010).

The multidirectional forces imposed on the knee joint during physical activity explain the types of severe knee injuries, including ruptures of the ACL. Those same forces also contribute to clients who may complain of patellofemoral joint pain (PFP). Therefore, not surprisingly, two of the more common diagnoses resulting from physical activity (especially in sports) are PFP and ACL sprains or tears. Most knee injuries occur during noncontact deceleration in the frontal and transverse planes. It has also been shown that static malalignments, abnormal muscle activation patterns, and dynamic malalignments alter neuromuscular control and can lead to PFP, ACL injury, and IT-band tendinitis (Brown et al., 2014; Gage et al., 2012; Weiss & Whatman, 2015).
