Colorado Brain Injury Health Education CBIHE Mission: "Make information and resources about concussion/TBI easily available online."

Colorado Rural Communities represent an underserved population of Coloradoans in regard to both healthcare access and health education, and concussion/ Traumatic Brain Injury is a problem that disproportionately affects rural individuals. Residents in rural areas have higher age-adjusted rates of both fatal traumatic brain injuries and those requiring hospitalization. The increased rate of TBI cou

pled with the lack of healthcare access and education puts rural communities at a significant disadvantage when addressing the issue of brain injury. Rural communities most often lack dedicated concussion/TBI resources or specialists and in many cases are dealing with a general shortage of health care providers and health resources for basic wellness. Although there is a significant population of concussion/TBI sufferers in rural areas, they are spread all across the state. Dealing with the basic geography of the rural demographic is the most difficult challenge when designing an effective, high impact education and community engagement program. The ideal venture will efficiently bring a large population of rural individuals TBI resources as well as establish a community that transcends geographic barriers and fosters a dialogue about the unique issues that surround rural concussion/TBI. The Colorado TBI Action Plan outlines the top collaborative priorities for 2009-2013 and first in the category of Education and Training of Providers and Consumers was to “Make information and resources available online”. The action plan also proposes improving accessibility to TBI resources for rural communities and reaching those with TBI through engagement on Facebook. Based on the needs identified in this action plan, our collaborative program will serve not only individuals but also the overarching goals of the Colorado brain injury community as a whole.
