RECAP – CHIE a trio of elephants on a string workshop, Saturday 22 November 2025.

In many ethnic minority cultures, the elephant is considered part of the family and an important contributor to life and society, and the elephant’s image is portrayed throughout textile art and the fabrics of many ethnic groups. For our November workshop we honoured this adorable animal by making 3 cute palm size replicas. As usual they needed loads of cotton filler, the trunks were especially tricky but after we finished by sewing on the eyes we all had cute little elephants to hang up at home.

Thanks again the Chie team for another lovely workshop.
For December we will have 2 sessions making 3 Christmas decorations each – a tree, star and boot (6 and 20 December afternoons 3pm-5pm)

RECAP – lecture on the Dragons of Vietnam (Vietnam - the land and children of dragons) with Professor Đinh Hồng Hải, Sunday 16 November 2025.

Legend says that the Vietnamese people are descendants of the dragon and the fairy (Con rồng cháu tiên). We know the story of Lạc Long Quân (the dragon) and Âu Cơ (the fairy); the dragon is one of the 4 sacred animals of Vietnam, it is a symbol of power and strength throughout the dynasties. Various dynasties had their own dragon images and Hải explained how to spot the differences and why/how they evolved throughout the dynasties, millennia and society. He discussed 5 key dimensions: its symbolic evolution, cultural influences, role in independence, religious significance, and modern identity.

And some interesting little facts – the dragon had 9 sons. Some of the images you see in art and adorning places of worship you may think are typical dragons but they may in fact be one of the 9 sons. Look very closely and spot the differences and which son. They are anywhere and everywhere such as holding up bells, adorning ridges and roof corners of places of worship, under bridges, on swords, and tops and bottoms of steles.

Today the dragon image is everywhere, symbolizing power, prosperity, and success.
Thank you Professor Đinh Hồng Hải for your time and sharing your valuable insight to help us better understand the world of the Vietnamese dragon.

RECAP- INDIGO DYEING workshop, Saturday 15 November 2025

Thanh from the Indigo Store, set up her business same year as FVH. We are both 26 years old this autumn 2025 and have a lovely long quarter of a century friendship.

Its been a while since we ran one of the indigo dyeing workshops. Indigo is like a little person – it needs lots of tender loving care from the moment the leaves are picked to the time the dyeing process begins. While the indigo dye is fermenting it needs to ‘eat and drink’. It is vegetarian :) In the summer months it needs to cool off in the heat and needs plants such as lemon grass, and in the winter it enjoys red chilli to keep it warm. And to drink…. well it loves super strong alcohol. And to help it develop its lovely deep blue apart from the air it needs limestone powder. With lots of TLC the rich indigo blue develops. This year has not been a good year due to the poor weather conditions but luckily the recent better weather in the north brought some of the deepest blue we have seen for a long time.

We dyed our own samples, created our own patterns both tie dye and batik. Thanks everyone for coming and we will do the next indigo dyeing workshop before or after Tet.
