Review Comments: believed most expensive in Central Vietnam. Teachers thought to be best available English speaking teachers in Danang. Some teachers have international certifications & teaching experience in USA. Teacher John Kane taught grade 5 in Chicago, USA for 20 years and is loved by his students and their parents. Great teacher. Couldn't be much better. All others are farther from perfect. Principal Anne is very kind, caring and professional, yet management decisions are fully controlled by a hard to contact, for-profit corporation.

Review Comments: my Canadian son attended for a year & we were quite happy, until he became upset with a bully classmate which was simultaneously the same time we moved to HCMC.
Commitment to quality:
- 100% of 1st graders can learn how to swim
- 100% of high school graduates, and IELTS of at least 5.5
- 95% into high quality national and international colleges and universities in the first year.
APU Int'l School ** & AUV University (called 'American but 100% controlled & run by Vietnamese lady); APU has a bigger campus in HCMC.
International Curricula: no internationally recognized curricula is thought to be followed, yet they use various textbooks that may be from USA. It may be advertised as used, but classes are free for all, anything goes. Up to each teacher.
# International vs local teachers: about 30% foreign teachers. 4 key Vietnamese teachers/managers (in their teens) are children of school owner, & thus are "powerful decision makers"
Teachers: Teachers are sought from USA, but hired from anywhere that accepts payment.
% with graduate degrees or specialty degrees:
Teaching Certificates: none except for Principal...if they actually still have a Principal.
School: % spoken in Vietnamese vs Eng/foreign lang. 20% spoken in Vietnamese in most classes & by all staff, but poor English for remainder
Tuition/year: a little less than SIS. ~$15,000/Year?
Highest accreditation: no international accreditation is thought to be held.
# students per class/teacher:
Grades taught: K-12 & basic university courses.
Bus service info: yes.
Review Comments: (called 'American but only for marketing, as 100% is controlled & run by one sole Vietnamese lady, granted she lived in USA for a while). High prices. Best point is the management was able to get partnerships with a few schools in USA to accept any APU student into the USschool… but generally only automatic acceptance into prep programs. Read fine print & check veracity & true quality of what's marketed.

* many private schools in Vietnam are money making enterprises. Their fees bear no relationship to the cost of living in Vietnam. They usually pay & provide low amounts yet make enormous profits, even the ones who state they are "not for profit". There is lack of continuity because the staff turnover is so high. Try finding a teacher with positive public, parent reviews that's worked more than 5 years, or getting a look at audited accounts or finding out who actually owns the school.
Check details and ask questions at the interview and parent teacher conferences. Ask: can you show me the lesson plan for last week & next week? Can I see the class text and materials? How many chapters have been taught this week and this year? We were at the end of the year, and I would have thought they would have covered the text. Their reply: they were going at lighting speed...they had almost completed the first chapter. At the end of the year, despite having lots of homework!!!! And they are very adroit at making sure all appears well. Send mom and dad A's and B's and homework assignments and all is well. It's assumed that details and quality are overlooked. Good luck.

NOTES:
Despite schools in Vietnam having an educational facade, it's all about the money.
Online learning, from kindergarten to university, is gaining in popularity throughout the world. However, it does take more involvement from the parents of adolescent children.
In return they will know exactly what the children are studying.
Two schools, side by side, in Vietnam. One International and one Vietnamese
International School - Starts at 0830 Finishes at 1500hrs. 6.5 hours less 1.5 hours of breaks
Vietnam School - Starts at 0730hrs Finishes at 1600hrs. 8.5 hours less 1.5 hours of breaks
International School teaches 25 hours a week
Vietnam School teaches 35 hours a week
The Vietnam School teaches 10 hours a week more than the International School over a 5 day week.
That equates to 2 days more of teaching a week at the Vietnam School. In addition the Vietnam School has fewer holidays than the International School.
This example indicates how the so called International Schools do as little as possible for as much money as possible. Not only do they charge as much as possible they also do as little as possible.
The shorter school day means that the pupils are loaded up with homework. The employed and well paid teachers only teach for the minimum amount of time.
The pupils do the work themselves at home. The school saves on teacher salaries based on working hours plus the building is only occupied for a minimum amount of time. Other savings are on the support staff working hours plus the utilities used in the building when the pupils are present.
Another saving is the school meal setup and private bus fees. Captive audience so it's a high prices, take it or leave it situation. Pupils are encouraged to take the school meal, which are overpriced for the quality and quantity of the food being served, as options for consuming a packed lunch are limited. Teachers often get free meals as part as their employment package so the pupils pay more for less.
Several schools may view each parent as a walking ATM. Press the correct buttons, say the correct code words, and the money comes out.
