The ozone layer forms a protective barrier in our planet's atmosphere. Located high above us, this layer absorbs harmful UV radiation, making life on Earth possible.

Human activities threaten this essential protection. Industrial and consumer poor practices release harmful substances like CFCs and HCFCs into the atmosphere, which deplete the ozone layer.

The Threat:
Human activities through poor practices releases harmful substances like CFCs and HCFCs into the atmosphere, which deplete the ozone layer. The consequence of this depletion is felt across Earth, affecting every living organism.

The Impact:
🔸 Increased UV-B exposure may lead to skin cancer, eye cataracts, and weakened immune systems
🔸 Reduced photosynthesis in plants affects food production
🔸 Aquatic ecosystems face devastation as marine organisms struggle with changing environments
🔸 Warmer oceans cause severe coral reef damage and destroy phytoplankton, creating imbalance in our food chain.

What You Can Do - Practice Sun Safety:
☀️ Cover up with long clothing
☀️ Wear broad-brimmed hats and UV protected sunglasses
☀️ Use sun umbrellas for shade
☀️ Apply sunscreen with SPF 15-30
☀️ Seek shade between 9 AM - 4 PM when UV index is highest

Together, we can make a difference. Every action to protect ourselves and reduce ozone-depleting substances helps preserve this vital shield for future generations.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines remain committed to ozone protection through the Montreal Protocol, ensuring our silent guardian continues its essential work.

Protection of our planet is paramount. Beyond our island shores, we are part of a wider global concern - the ozone layer acts as Earth's shield, blocking harmful UV radiation from the sun.

Unfortunately, human activities release ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere. These substances thin and deplete the ozone layer, creating serious consequences for human health, plant and aquatic organisms, and materials.

Our Government is Commitment to Action:
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, through its National Ozone Unit, plays a crucial role in safeguarding the ozone layer through decisive action.
We have ratified key international agreements:
🌍 Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer
🌍 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its amendments

The NOU manages national programs to comply with the Montreal Protocol:
📋 Processing licenses for refrigerant importation
📋 Developing and implementing national policies within the refrigeration sector
📋 Ensuring technicians are professionally trained and certified in good refrigeration and air conditioning practices
📋 Promoting low global warming potential, energy-efficient alternative technologies

Our comprehensive approach demonstrates how small island developing states can contribute to global environmental action while protecting local communities and supporting professional development.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines continues its nearly three-decade commitment to exceeding international environmental standards, proving that decisive action based on scientific evidence creates lasting benefits for current and future generations.

This September, we are taking ozone layer education directly to our students!

The National Ozone Unit is visiting 6 schools across Saint Vincent to teach young people about the importance of ozone layer protection and sun safety practices.

Students will learn about: What the ozone layer is, the harmful effects of ozone depletion, why ozone protection is essential for the environment, our health and the wellbeing of future generations and daily sun safety practices for healthy living.

This year's World Ozone Day theme "From Science to Global Action 40 years of the Vienna Convention" reminds us that the Montreal Protocol, the landmark treaty to protect the ozone layer, was built on scientific evidence showing how man-made chemicals were depleting ozone.

Guided by this knowledge, countries came together to take decisive action, phasing out ozone-depleting substances. This effort not only safeguarded the ozone layer but also significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, setting a model for international cooperation on both ozone protection and climate change.

Thank you to the school administrators, teachers, and students who participated and will participate in these educational sessions.

Together, we are building environmental awareness that will benefit Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for generations to come.

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

--

MESSAGE FOR INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE OZONE LAYER,16 September 2025

Forty years ago, nations came together to take the first step in protecting the ozone layer – guided by science, united in action.
The Vienna Convention and its Montreal Protocol became a landmark of multilateral success.

Today, the ozone layer is healing. This achievement reminds us that when nations heed the warnings of science, progress is
possible. Scientists are sounding the alarm once again. We are hurtling towards pushing global temperatures 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with devastating consequences.

I urge governments to fully ratify and implement the Kigali Amendment to the Protocol which commits to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) - potent greenhouse gases used primarily in cooling technologies.

And I also urge them to reflect this commitment in their new national climate plans – or NDCs.

These must be aligned with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and cover all sectors and greenhouse gases, including HFCs.

Implementing the Kigali Amendment could avoid up to 0.5 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of the century. Paired with energy-efficient cooling, we could double these gains.

Every fraction of a degree matters. Every action counts.

On this World Ozone Day, let’s recommit to preserving our ozone layer and to protecting people and planet for generations to come.

🌍 Celebrating World Ozone Day 2025 under the Theme: From Science to Global Action - 40 Years of the Vienna Convention

Today we commemorate the global effort to protect our ozone layer - the invisible shield in our atmosphere that protects us from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Watch our educational video to learn what the ozone layer is, where it's located, and why protecting it protects all life on Earth.

The ozone layer shields us and our environment, in return, we must protect it through our daily choices and actions.

Join the global effort to protect the ozone layer: 🔧 For cooling solutions, choose air conditioning systems that use alternative technologies with natural refrigerants - they have no or low global warming potential and are energy efficient 👨‍🔧 Always use trained technicians who follow good refrigeration practices during equipment servicing 🌱 Make environmentally conscious choices that support ozone protection.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has been protecting the ozone layer since 1996, consistently exceeding international targets and building local expertise. Together, we continue this important work for current and future generations.
